"Changed"

Alberton is not what it used to be—and locals know it.

This was once a quiet, family-friendly area where people took pride in their homes and looked out for each other. That sense of stability is slipping. There’s been a clear shift in who’s moving into the area, and with that has come a loss of community and a growing feeling of uncertainty.

Fussell Place is a perfect example. Traffic has increased significantly, turning what should be a residential street into a constant flow of cars. Complaints have been made to council and even raised with the road traffic MP, yet nothing changes. Residents are being ignored while the problem gets worse.

And it’s not just traffic. Even Mt Carmel College is impacting the area differently now. There are more issues with student behaviour, and nearby residents are dealing with disruptions and damage to property. That’s not acceptable, and it’s unfair on the people who live here.

This suburb used to be ideal for young families. Now it feels like it’s being left to decline without proper attention or accountability. Long-term residents can see the difference—and it’s not for the better.

If nothing is done, Alberton will continue to lose what made it a good place to live in the first place.

Looking for a home in Alberton?

"Grew up here but moved to Eastern Suburbs and then moved back"

I grew up in Queen Street Alberton as a child. Later I bought my first property in Hyde Park but hated living in the area - people just arent as friendly as Alberton. Circumstances changed for me and I eventually bought my family home here in Alberton and I just love it. The neighbours are great and the wide tree lined streets and best of all I can leave my car at home (I hate driving) as the train or bus so close by. Shopping here has improved with St Clair which I can walk to, and the new upgraded Port Canal. Of course you still get the 'interesting' people in the area - but it all makes for diversity and adds to the culture. It was what I hated about living in Hyde Park - everyone seemed to have massive cars and so worried about being broken into. I have never had any issues here although had a couple of weirdos hanging around. I catch the train to work and everyone at the station talks to you - we have a couple of supported living accommodation residents catching the train who talk to everyone and I can say everyone looks out for them and ensures they get the train etc - never saw much kindness of that type in the Eastern suburbs. The other thing is that is has kept its beautiful grand homes other councils have allowed these to be developed for infill but Alberton has managed to retain them. I say if you want to live close to the city have a period home within a diverse cultural area then Alberton is your pick.

"Incredibly Community Orientated. Beautiful Heritage Homes."

Some absolutely stunning homes around the suburb. Wide streets laced with Jacarandas & ancient gum trees with a range of stunning heritage / period homes. Great transport links to the city & Port with a real community vibe. A great family neighborhood with a range of parks & public tennis courts etc. Lovely little Cafe "The Pear" just opened up next to the train station too.

"Be prepared to be pleasantly surprised...I was"

A surprisingly pleasant area to walk around. Alberton has a bad reputation, probably solely because it is home to the working class Port Adelaide Footy Club. But the streets have lovely old gums, are nice and wide with plenty of street parking. I've spent a lot of time down this way at various times. Coming to the oval to play or watch its always looked ok. But having recently gone back after so long, I was surprised how good the vibe was, how safe I felt with my kids. I think this is a great area ready to go boom.

It’s not far from the developing Port Adelaide area with plenty of shops and markets. It’s also an easy drive down Port Road into the city. There are some wonderful shops down at the Port so you should be able to get everything cheaply and of a high quality.

In can get a little busy around Alberton Oval on game days but not as bad as it once was.
I think this is an area to watch, as my last visit I was pleasantly surprised. One for families, dobn't dismiss it because it's Alberton...
