Things You Need To Remember To Do When You Have Moved Into Your New Home

Buying a new home is likely to be the biggest financial outgoing you’ll ever make, but it will be one of the most exciting and stressful times of your life.

Therefore, these points are here to help make sure you remember exactly what you need to do once you’ve actually moved into your home.

1. Tell people
A lot of people forget to inform people of their new address details, particularly if it’s your first property purchase/move.

Make a list, send an email (particularly if you also need to change internet providers and have a new email address) to those in your Contacts list. Buy some ready-made cards (you can fill in your new address and contact details) for those who don’t use email to send via post to those who are in your address book, such as older relatives. And if time gets short, just make sure pick up the phone and let them know.

Aside from your friends and family, there are also likely to be several companies who you’ll have to make aware of your new address. Your employer and your bank are the two most obvious and prominent companies, but then there are companies like your superannuation, mobile phone carrier, car insurer and any places where you are a member, such as a gym, clubs etc. Then there are government agencies such as the RTA for your driver’s license and car registration, electoral roll transfer, Centrelink for any benefits and Medicare.

2. Post
Filling in a change of address and re-directing your mail will ensure that you still receive post from anyone you have missed informing.

3. Setup your necessary bills
One of the first things you should do when moving into your new home is to contact the supplier of all of your necessary services and setup an account and payment in your name.

Council rates, utility bills (gas, electricity, phone, water), and home and contents insurances are most usual bills to be notified and set up. Some additional ones may include internet, pay tv, and services such as lawnmowing, gardening and cleaning.

So enjoy your new home!
