New Town

"Safe, quiet and inexpensive"

Having grown up in New Town, it is the kind of place that is wedged between lower socio-economic parts and upper-middle class families. This gives it a very different feel dependent on which street/specific area you reside in. Generally, having lived on Loina St, Swanston St and Queen St, I have found New Town to be very peaceful and generally quite safe. There is an abundance of parks and some of the best schools are in this suburb. There are a few shopping options around, although if you want clothes or specialty items you may have to travel elsewhere. It is quite central to Hobart, and nearly all buses that depart from bus stop E in the mall run through the area. Overall, as long as you stay away from the housing developments/the area across from New Town plaza, I would highly recommend New Town.

  • Housing styles

Kew
Editors Choice

"Beautiful, friendly and safe suburb. Perfect for families or people seeking peace and quiet."

Close enough to the city to be convenient, far enough away to get out from the hustle and bustle of closer suburbs. Kew is a safe and friendly suburb with a lot of grocery shopping and heaps of great restaurant options. There is a nightlife in terms of eating out, but if you want entertainment or clubs/bars etc this is not place for you. The parklands are beautiful and the area attracts a lot of wealthy families and elderly people. Great community spirit, often have Christmas get togethers for our streets and neighbours always waving hello/goodbye etc. It is an expensive suburb when compared with Hawthorn/Armadale etc, but well worth it in our opinion. The traffic gets quite congested around peak hours (avoid the Kew Junction if you can), and although we have the 48 and 109 trams running through very frequently, a train station in Kew would make travel to the city so much quicker. There aren't any nearby gym options other than the Boroondara Aquatics centre, which is a bit poor. Many many medical facilities with dental centres, psychologists, physios and doctors throughout and surrounding the junction area. Very safe, been living here for 1.5 years and haven't felt unsafe at any point walking the streets at night etc. All in all would highly recommend Kew. Get off street parking if you can though, since you do need a residential parking permit for central streets.

Great for

  • Safe
  • Beautiful
  • Peaceful
  • Nice Houses

Not great for

  • No train line
  • Parking permit zones
  • Bad traffic around peak hours
  • Expensive Houses

Battery Point

"Quiet and peaceful suburb in the heart of Hobart"

Quiet suburb with many home owners and retirees. Very few young people around. Battery point is a short walk to the CBD, and Sandy-Bay where there is a Woolworths, shopping hub, and many restaurants. Unfortunately no public transport runs directly through Battery Point so this leaves a lot to be desired. The cultural heritage runs through the streets and many residences are beautifully historic.

Great for

  • Proximity to CBD
  • Good capital appreciation
  • Quality area
  • Friendly area
  • Lots of good cafes

Not great for

  • Limited ability to renovate due to heritage listings

South Yarra

"Good for go getters and professionals- wouldn't want to raise a family here."

Having moved to Melbourne from Hobart, South Yarra was our choice of suburb because of safety and the wealthy pleasant atmosphere.
It has been a very convenient suburb to live in for the past year, as we have not had to travel out of the suburb to buy anything (Chapel street is great for clothes shopping too!).
There isn't much of a community vibe, as everyone is busy doing their own thing. Mostly wealthy middle aged and young adults, well-groomed professionals. Many apartment blocks and new development happening constantly. It's a common site to see Lamborghini and Ferraris doing chap laps around the main road. Good restaurants and a lot of cafes around the place (Verve Spice is great little brunch spot!) Lots of funky bars and fast paced takeaways.
Good for people wanting an inner-city apartment style life.
HOWEVER,
Very very expensive. Expect to be paying $450minimum per week for anything with two bedrooms.
Additionally, the fast pace and self-absorbed atmosphere can get tiring after a while especially if you aren't one to be particularly focused on materialistic things or are raising a young family.

Great for

  • Caulfield and Clayton train station line - frequent trains
  • Modern suburb with celebrity appearances
  • All kind of retail shops Big W, woolwoth , coles, safeway etc
  • Cafe & Restaurant, shops, public transport
  • Movies, Spa, Gym, Medical, schools
  • Nice Apartments.
  • Walking distance to major Melbourne attractions

Not great for

  • Expensive to rent
  • No community
  • Quite busy
  • Traffic and parking
