Dubbo

"Fantastic place to live!"

I moved to Dubbo from Western Sydney over a year ago for work and I have to say that after reading some of the reviews on this website, I was very concerned as to whether I was doing the right thing- it sounded like a nightmare! Let me say this, Dubbo is a great place to live and I don't regret moving here for a second.

Dubbo is a large country town/ small city that has all the facilities one could possibly need. Shopping is excellent; there are great cafes, pubs and restaurants (not as good as a big city but this is not a big city). There are medical services, hospitals, dentists, gyms and sports facilities, mechanics, panel beaters, trades people, government agencies, big banks, car dealerships, real estate agencies, and all related services, white goods and furniture stores, an airport and train station........you name it, Dubbo has it.

Combine all that with some of the most friendly, hospitable people I've met in my life and it makes a wonderful place to live and raise a family. I love it so much that I have committed to the area and I am building a house here for around a third of what I would have to pay in Sydney.

Are there any downsides? Sure. The summers are absolutely brutal and the winters are freezing- there are some rough-nuts around the place but definitely no worse than what you would find anywhere else (try living in Auburn, Bankstown or Granville etc.) and obviously there is not as much to do in a country town as there is in a big city.

On balance though, Dubbo is a wonderful, friendly place to live and I consider myself fortunate to be here. My wife also loves it- she is Filipino and I was concerned about how she would adapt to living in a regional area and how she would fit in but it's been wonderful- she has made more friends and acquaintances here than she ever did in Sydney. My son loves it too and I consider this a far better place to raise a child than a two bedroom apartment overlooking a highway in Western Sydney.

I love Dubbo and I would recommend it to anyone- it's not perfect but nowhere is. It is however, a fantastic place to live and raise a family. Move here with an open mind and a positive attitude and watch your life change for the better!

Yes. Everywhere I go in Dubbo there are 'Help wanted' signs. There is plenty of work in Dubbo if you are willing.
