Thornlands

"Nice growing suburb with huge potential"

I use to live on the Border of Thornlands and its a handy suburb for anyone to live in. It has a small shopping Centre called Crystal Gardens with an IGA and about half a dozen smaller shops. It sits between Cleveland with its nice Cafes and boutique shops and Victoria Point Shopping Centre to the South with its Restaurants, cinema and Retail outlets. There is a future shopping Centre planned called Paradise Gardens which will have its own Woolworths on Panorama Dr near Boundary Rd intersection. In terms of public transport the nearest train station is at Cleveland. There is also a new bus station being built soon at Victoria Point.

Redland Bay

"Great place to live"

Moved to Redland Bay from busy Melbourne and love it. The Bay is close by and houses are affordable for a bayside suburb. People are friendly and there are some nice parks. Infrastructure is being added with more to come with Weinum Creek and Shoreline Developments starting very soon. Currently we have the Red Edge shopping Centre which has about 15 shops and also we have Redland Bay Village which is our small town centre which is slowly growing. We had a 7Eleven and drive through coffee club open a few months ago. There is also the Donald Rd shops which has expanded to allow for more shops. The barge from Weinum creek can take you to the small islands of the mainland, furthermore Brisbane CBD is a 50 min drive and Gold Coast 45min drive.

We are looking to move to the area. I am originally from Redlands but have been on the Gold Coast for 10 years. Just wondering if Weinum Creek and Shoreline Developments are approved?

Shoreline is approved. Right now they are doing the road upgrades. Giles Rd intersection has just been upgraded, Double Jump and Boundary Rd are next to be upgraded. Weinum Creek development has been taken over by the Council. They have purchased a large block of land next to Weinum Creek and plan to first build car park at the moment

Thanks so much. So if you were going to purchase in the area would you recommend Weinum creek end or closer to down where Shoreline will be? Theres not much down that way atm is there?

Not much down where shoreline is at the moment, only farmland. There is a new estate called the crossing behind the new 7eleven in the northen end of Redland Bay. Its 4 min from Weinum creek and 4 min from Victoria Point Shopping Centre and 2 min from Redland Bay village. Or you got stage 3 of Park edge release if you want something quiter with greenery. There are some newly built houses there, its off Collins Rd at the Roundabout. Its 2 min from Rededge shops and 4 min from Redland Village and 5 from Weinum creek.

Hi- looking for a place to live moving from Melbourne. I was wondering if the beach is like st kilda/south melbourne or more like "proper" beach- ie maroochydore without the surf.
Thanks for any help

avrilk, it's not in any way a glitzy surf beach as there are many small islands and the much larger Stradbroke Island between this area and the open ocean. It is very pretty, good for fishing and exploring but not much sand to speak of. Quite a bit of mud and mangrove, so not really popular for swimmers. Nothing at all like the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast - it has it's own quiet, winding shoreline and island-protected beauty. I absolutely love it.

Thinking very seriously about getting out of Victoria and heading to the beach where my wife has always wanted to live.
Perth, Hervey Bay, Tweed Heads the choices until a friend mentioned Redland Bay after having lived there.
It seems to tick all our boxes.
AFL both north and south, fishing, golf, great pub apparently, beautiful scenery, quiet lifestyle and not much crime.
Concerns are the heat. Could we handle it being from one of the coldest spots in Vic. Apparently jan/Feb is oppressive.
Midgees. Ive been told they are really bad as well. Hate those little suckers.
Are there bad parts of Redland Bay to avoid. Is there certain areas to try and live in? We are in our early 50s and still working I might add, so how is employment.
Would appreciate any advice as Im sure Covid has changed a lot of things, like it has everywhere.
Thanks.

Redland Bay has midges, yes. At certain times of the year. But so does a million other places. I am not sure how bad but am about to find out as we are building there over next 12 months. I have lived in the Redlands region for 30 years but not in Redland Bay specifically. Council does aerial spraying of the Redlands (whether we like it or not) at certain times of the year. I have lived all over Qld and whether north, west on in the south east, would never live anywhere without screens. When midges/mossies are about, close everything up before nightfall when at their worst. There is also "technology" haha. It is the price we pay I guess but I think worth it. Speaking to the neighbours who have lived beside the block we are building, they say that mostly it is not a problem and the benefits of living by the water and the lovely pocket that it is, is well worth it. This area is moving ahead fast and a big growth area (saw this on tv and in publications several times this year). Due to affordability, quieter lifestyle and now the developments that are well progressed as mentioned in posts above. This is definitely improving infrastructure. Roads are widening (as traffic flow a bit of a pain atm), Shoreline early stages have started, Weinnam Ck area has new ferry terminal to the islands and the huge car park is complete, along with approval for residential units there. Big news is that the second of it's kind fancy concept Woolworths is due to open next year and building is well under way. First one is in Melbourne. This will undoubtedly create a big flow on of improvement to shops around. The pub is ok, great position but definitely a bit tired. Lots of character. But along with everything else, will be given a face lift at some stage. I HATE summer and I am a Queenslander but living beside the coast is about 5 degrees cooler than inland. I am only able to tolerate our summer because of air conditioning. Absolute necessity. Proximity to M1 and Gold Coast is very handy. Employment options locally are limited in Redland Bay itself. No train line which has always been a deterrent for city commuters but there is a bus service which I think will improve as population grows. And believe me, it is growing fast. I hope that we don't lose the lovely vibe that we have now. We are in our mid-late 50's and not into pubs and clubs. We like it because of the natural beauty, coastal breezes, quiet neighbourhoods and lack of high rise etc. When we move we hope to get a jet ski to explore what is literally in our front yard. We were thrilled to see two new coffee shops open recently in the area. Hope this helps.

Victoria Point

"A growing town which has it all"

Victoria point has it all. Its a growing area with the water 5 minutes away, victoria point shopping centre, restaurants and cafes, medical facilities, gyms and parks, not to mention redlands hospital 15 minutes away, 35 minutes to the airport and 40 min to the city with affordable housing compared to Melbourne and Sydney. Brisbane is catching up to Melbourne and Sydney and history shows that houses near water with ample facilities always perform very well. Just to let you know im talking about victoria point in brisbane just realized this is in victoria
