Stafford Heights

"Hidden gem, excellent value"

Stafford Heights is one of the best places I've lived. Approximately 8km from the CBD its close enough to be part of the action but still quiet and relaxed. Its in a very convenient location and has good public transport with high-frequency buses as well as lots of shopping options close to Chermside and Stafford shopping centres, and Coles, Woolies and Aldi are all close. The area is getting trendier with new cafes and restaurants popping up e.g. the Two Zero Bar and Inn, Prova Pizzeria on the popular Wilgarning street or Grilling Art (awesome burgers). Ive also noticed a lot of renovation happening. Despite this the area is still very affordable to buy and rent much more than surrounding suburbs, and you get a decent amount of land. No issues with flooding due to the elevation (as alluded to by the surburb name), with lovely breezes in Summer and city views in some parts. The area feels very safe and has a real community feel, maybe because more people own their homes rather than rent (no units) so you have a more stable community. There are good schools within the catchment and great childcare options.

Red Hill

"Nice but expensive"

Red Hill is quite a nice suburb and super close to the CBD. I lived there for two years. Its obviously very convenient with everything close-by. It has a cat cafe! You are close to the Normanby hotel, as well as all the restaurants at Paddington and Suncorp Stadium which is great if youre into the NRL. The major downfall for me is how expensive it is to buy or rent, better value elsewhere a few more ks out from the city. Street parking can also be an issue, and the houses are very close together. There were a lot of dogs near where I lived, and I was sometimes kept awake by the barking.

Great for

  • Very convenient
  • Close to suncorp stadium
  • Lots of restaurants

Not great for

  • Expensive
  • Noisy
  • Minimal on street parking for residents and visitors
  • Typical Red Hill cottages are built very close together - not good if you want some room between neighbouring properties

Bowen Hills

"Convenient but noisy"

Bowen Hills is very convenient, but not too family-friendly in my opinion. Its mostly units and quite noisy with lots of traffic and ambulance / helicopter noises given the proximity to the hospital. Not much street parking. Good public transport with the RBWH busway and the train station, although you often see police around the train station and doesn't always feel safe. You are close to the RNA showgrounds so can walk to the Ekka when its on. I think this suburb is best suited to students / young professionals. Good cafes and restaurants close-by.

Great for

  • Close to everything - Walk to Fortitude Valley
  • Excellent Public Transport

Not great for

  • Not family-friendly
  • Noisy
  • Lack of street parking
