"One of the best..."
Beaumaris is up there with the best pockets in Melbourne.
Leafy, clean, spacious and far enough away from the flea bag suburbs down the tracks.
Great for
- Clean
- Leafy
Not great for
- Cost, but you get what you pay for

"Much like Chelsea."
Much the same as Chelsea...
Not great for
- Distance from the city (pro and con)
- Proximity to undesirable areas
- People that think possums are actually of concern.
"A smart choice..."
Ivanhoe and surrounding area is always a smart choice.
Trendy cafes on one side, world class health care on the other, some of the best school in the country within stone throw and very, very close to the CBD.
Buying is not cheap though...
Great for
- Schools
- Lifestyle
- Everything at the Doorstep
- Leafy Streets
- Stunning Old Houses
Not great for
- Expensive

"Great area for the less affluent hipster"
Fairfield is a great little pocket. Has all the style of Clifton Hill/Abbotsford/Fitzroy but at this stage in the price cycles is still somewhat more affordable. Becoming a little bit heavy on the trendies but don't let that scare you away.
Great for
- But not too close to the city
- Quick to the city
- Surrounded by parklands

"Glad I only work out this way...."
Not sure why people are on about Bonbeach so much, has to be the most overrated suburb on this site. Miles away from anything (except the lousy beach), one, yes ONE, public transport option, close to Seaford/Frankston so get used to hearing rev limiters on V8s, sopping options lacking (although new home maker center up the road is okay) shall I go on?
Not great for
- No nightlife
- Feels like a ghost town
- No shops
"One of Melbournes best kept secrets"
Eaglemont remains one of Melbournes best, largely undiscovered pockets. Beautiful leafy streets, little to no flow through traffic and exceptional public transport options (access to the city in well under 25 minutes) and cost of living for what it is, is very reasonable.
Great for
- Exceptional local school choices
- Leafy Streets
- Safe and Sound
- Stunning Architecture

"Great little suburb"
Lacking in a few areas but is the pick of the affordable beach side suburbs at the moment.

"On the way..."
Heidelberg heights is on the improve and is currently great value for money. This suburb still has a way to go and lacks a little in the transport options but ll in all should see much improvement over the next ten years or so (already evident in the amount of development in the area).
Great for
- Close to shopping
- Good value for money for proximity to city
Not great for
- Could have more parks

"Nice area, but..."
Nice place to be of you love driving (public transport is woeful). Neighborly, clean and in general a nice lifestyle.
Not great for
- Needs more public transport options. The buses are great, very reliable and fast....but a train line would be a fantastic option for commuters, and way overdue.

I live in Doncaster and have all the PT I need almost at my doorstep as well as a direct bus to Box Hill station. People in suburbs with trains also need to drive to a station or take a bus anyway. Box Hill is quite close enough and have done it since over 40 years ago. Imagine living in Wheelers Hill?
"One of the best..."
Without a doubt this is one of the best suburbs in Melbourne. Clean, green, the best schools, on one of the best serviced train lines (zone one) and people are in general friendly (but a bit reclusive) . Apart from the cost of property in this area there is nothing not to like.
Great for
- Leafy
- Quiet
- Beautiful homes
- Nice Cafes
Not great for
- Boring
- No bars

"Not quite there, close."
Has potential but not there yet. Streets lack any sort of greenery, no stand out education options, proximity to questionable suburbs makes it prone to undesirable blow through types and if proximity to the city is of relevance public transport can be a problem (serviced by one train line only). Location in regards to beach is both a blessing and a curse, beaches are nice, influx of weekend visitors dramatically reduces the relaxed lifestyle of the area.
Great for
- Beach
- Has potential
- Cheap

what a ridiculous rating considering your comments and ratings on other surrounding suburbs.
Why is public transport a problem? tell me any other suburb 30km from the city that have any other option apart from a train line to the city? To be picky there is actually a bus route that could take you another train line, pretty much like any other mid-range suburb.
No stand out education options? Chelsea PS and a catholic junior school?
Better infrastructure and services than most of the surrounding suburbs.
For some reason Chelsea is singled out for being near some other questionable suburb?
Bonbeach is closer to the "questionable suburb" which I assume is Frankston.
One could say the CBD is questionable suburb really.
Coastal Joe - have you actually lived in Chelsea at any point in time? Only ask because you really seem very informed about the suburb.
Are you seriously suggesting that the slight possibility of running into a person with less money than you is dangerous and traumatising? What do you suggest Kingston Council do to avert such an appalling happening - insist on seeing title deeds to a property within the official suburb limits before allowing just anyone access to the streets or god forbid - the beach?

"Great area but becoming crowded."
Hawthorn is a suburb of mixed livability. In some parts streets are leafy and filled with nice houses, on the flip side it is becoming a cramped student ghetto full of cheap, high density apartments without adequate car parking or transport options. The only thing that is consistent in Hawthorn is the dangerous driving from the Soccer Moms in German SUV's brigade.
Not great for
- A bit "seedy" in certain areas
- Congested, high density living
- Expensive

What are the seedy areas of Hawthorn? Movng from Syd with a 3 yr old, any recommendations and where to avoid !?!
"Close to the city, brilliant facilities"
Watch Heidelberg over the next few years, leafy, green clean area, safe, quite, zone one, some of the best schools in Melbourne, no weekly influx of tourists (bogans) ruining the peaceful lifestyle like the beach side suburbs and two premium shopping centers within ten minutes.
Great for
- Friendly
- Great shopping options
- Safe and sound

Working somewhere and living somewhere are two different things. I guess you would spend at least 6 hrs infront of people or a screen? People move away from being in the heart of the 'amenities' so they can visit them and leave for some peace and quiet.. Depends how you want to live. You haven't' really said where you live or prefer to live as in sleep at night. Bonbeach is laid back.
