"Lovely Leafy streets with period homes."

Our family loves living in leafy Surrey Hills. It’s a friendly neighbourhood with shady tree-lined streets, beautiful period houses, parks and playgrounds. Walking locally is a pleasure and safe. Canterbury Sports Ground is home to the local Footy and Cricket clubs. There is a great choice of cafes along Union Rd. Village with our own specialist Supermarket. Surrey Hills is well serviced for transport. We have good access to trains and Surrey Hills ‘Premium station; trams #109 Box Hill-Melbourne’s CBD & #70 Wattle park-Docklands, and bus lines travelling to/from Box Hill; Camberwell, (via Deakin Uni.), Chadstone & #903 to Melb. Airport.
The choice of quality schools and kindergartens in the area for both public and private is second to none.
It has a great community feel with the local Surrey Hills Progress Assoc. formed by residents, takes pride in the betterment of our suburb.

"Fantastic suburb"

One of the best suburbs in Melbourne. Leafy streets and great community spirit. Walking distance to cafes, restaurants and Wattle park. The local Coles in Surrey Hills is great with its coffee cart and speciality items. We also have access to all the amenities in Box Hills and Camberwell. The suburb has one of the best-serviced train lines in Melbourne and the level-crossing removal and the station upgrade (to be completed in 2023) will make it even better.

Rentals in Surrey Hills

"LEAFY SURREY HILLS"

Prominently located Surrey Hills is a lovely suburb which is only about 12kms approx from Melbourne CBD. Union Road Retail Village is supported by a strip of grocers, gourmet cafes, deli, organic health shops and boutique shops. Making it easy to enjoy a quick catch up with friends with an array of options at one’s disposal. Nearby shopping centres include Box Hill Centre, Westfield al, Doncaster and Chadstone Shopping Centre. With Surrey Hills train station, tram routes and a bus service all operating in the suburb makes it easy to travel in and around Melbourne. Surrey Hills is also home to many lovely parks. They include South Surrey Park and Surrey Gardens, where one can take a stroll and enjoy the indigenous and beautiful gardens. With great shaded areas and playgrounds, this makes it ideal for family picnics. Wattle Park is another much loved green patch and is only about 6 mins drive. It has an unusual picnic area converted from an old bus and the twin wooden playground add to a wonderful feature and a sensational play area for children. With a location loaded with every lifestyle advantage, it’s not surprising why Surrey Hills is a top performing and chosen suburb.

For a standard 4-bedroom house, you can expect to pay approx. $580.00 per week in rent.

"Charming Neighbourhood with Great Public Transport"

Surrey Hills is a fantastic suburb to live in with something for everybody. The great thing is that residents have access to both the Lilydale/Belgrave Train lines running through both Chatham and Surrey Hills train stations as well as the 109 Tram along Whitehorse Road. There is also a great variety of religious and state primary schools as well as quiet, leafy streets. The Union Road shopping village is an excellent focal point for this suburb with great cafes, organic stores and the very popular Coles Local.

"happy to have lived, but happier to have left"

Moved into a shared unit with some girl friends of mine. It was a very safe and pretty suburb for someone who have been walking around by herself at night time (me). Demographic wise, it is predominantly Asian (probably mainly Chinese since it is close to box hill) and Caucasians. Neighbors are generally friendly-usually greet each other with nod and smile.
Restaurants and cafes are within walking distance since I live around the train station. I find their price is usually a bit higher than average but they are generally quite classic
Public transport to the city is very good compared with other lines because it is more speedy and less crowded.
However, for such an affluent suburb reflected from its property price, you would expect better public facilities rather than the narrow roads, outdated train station that doesn't provide comfortable toilets. Also, what seem quite ridiculous for me is that there is no bulk-billing GPs nearby-I had to go to Boxhill.
A killing point for me is the driving especially around the train station-the level crossing, the steep hill, the shabby road and the traffic just makes it not worthwhile. Also I got honked several times, one for driving too slowly as my small car is struggling to climb uphill, one for leaving a space in the "keep it clear" strip as the traffic light turn red while the car behind me was just pushing to turn left, and another time for driving across the "keep it clear" strip as the light turn green unaware that some guy is trying to make a move. you just never win

"Scary place"

I live off warrigarl road and I was constantly being honked, shouted at (even at ten years old) and almost run over thourgh out my a childhood, I knew some kids who did get hit. I also went to shps and its a overcrowded, underfunded school with angry children that constantly get in to fights and all the teacher gave was a "don't do it again". There is nothing for kids to do so they go tagging of explore abandoned buildings I also think warrigarl road will probably kill somebody some body soon overall the suburb isn't too great from a kids perpective.

"The best place to grow up and have a family"

Me and my family moved from a northern suburb to here and I am so thankful to my parents for making the move. I have loved growing up in Surrey Hills. My primary school was only a short walk across the leafy roads of Surrey Hills. High school was also only a walk away across the beautiful roads. The cafes are great and reasonably priced, my favorite being Watts Cooking. I love Surrey Hill so much and hope to raise a family here myself, and I honestly cannot think of a better place to live. The only downside is we have been burgled once or twice and attempted many a times, but I feel 100% safe to walk home at night.

Without a doubt this is one of the best suburbs in Melbourne. Clean, green, the best schools, on one of the best serviced train lines (zone one) and people are in general friendly (but a bit reclusive) . Apart from the cost of property in this area there is nothing not to like.

"Horrible place"

I've been working in this suburb for a few years now and am shocked at how rude our neighbours are. The suburb itself is beautiful with nice trees, beautiful homes and some interesting shopping areas. The cafes are also lovely with pleasant staff and excellent food. Many of the residents on the other hand have spoiled an otherwise lovely area. I'm careful to always use the pedestrian crossings but am still almost getting run over (and interestingly enough, verbally abused for crossing the street legally...), sworn at and threatened by a resident who thought it insane of me to park my car in a legal public parking spot in her street, and the list just goes on. I know I just look like I'm having a rant here, but I was previously genuinely interested in relocating to Surrey Hills but am now terrified to even greet the neighbours!

What a shame you didn't choose our beautiful and friendly street to live in! We love living here :)

kimble

I have to admit I never found it particularly friendly either. Newer residents were ok - however, those that had been there for a long time seemed to look down their noses at others.

moved here last January and have discovered beautiful neighbours and lovely village atmosphere. Huge 130 year old trees shade my garden. Love Surrey Hills

"A quiet, leafy but boring suburb suitable for the elderly/families - possums outnumber people!"

Very quiet and peaceful area, good for the elderly and for families as there are lots of schools nearby.
The tree lined streets are well maintained and there are many gorgeous houses, it's a lovely area to walk around! The traffic isn't too bad - except at peak hour when the railway crossings at Mont Albert road and Union road get very blocked.

Public transport is good if you live near one of the train stations/tram lines. However the pocket of Surrey Hills near canterbury rd/elgar rd is very poorly serviced.

I wouldn't recommend living here if you want to have fun, as there is nothing to do here. It's in a dry area also (the residents like it this way) so there are no bars or pubs.

The suburb is overrun with possums, I had many sleepless nights when these creatures took up residence inside the roof of my house. This is a real problem in Surrey Hills!

"NO BETTER PLACE!!"

We just love it! Lovely leafy streets, fantastic neighbours, well behaved children, almost zero crime or trouble - a place that seems to live according to good old fashioned family values! We bought just 3 years ago and literally cannot believe how much more our place is worth now - so glad we got here when we did - we'd never be able to afford to buy here now! And access from here is just perfect (just try and avoid Mont Albert Road at peak times!). Surrey Hills is just one of those quiet little treasures that is on the up and up. We've never been so happy as we are here.
