"Midland from a Resident"
Midland is a very old town with reputation that paints it in a negative light. Being a resident here of nearly a year now, I can promise not all of it is true, but it isn't exactly Peppermint Grove either. Yes, it has lots of indigenous people, but I have never had any problems with the locals, white, black, yellow, brown or otherwise. The local corner deli owners are friendly and will remember your name. Good public transport, medical facilities and shops means it's got everything you need in close proximity.
As for living, rentals are a dime a dozen, however, being an old city, you get old houses. So don't be suprised if you come across an old tin and fibro home for 300 a week. Real-estate expectations from agents and owners can be a bit ridiculous so look around for a great deal. And speaking of great deals, units and townhouses in Midland are excellent bang for buck. A lot of old homes are being knocked down and replaced with units and townhouses that are easily 300k houses in terms of quality and value.
Basically, don't come to Midland expecting it to be some backwater town. It has a lot to offer for those with the patience to stop and look around. It's no Joondalup but it's not half bad.
