Macgregor

"Relaxing, Affordable, Convenient and Friendly"

My family moved to New Macgregor a few years ago, after buying a budget 3 bedroom house. We love the fact that we are on the edge of a nature reserve, a golf course, farmland and a recycling center, yet can drive 5 minutes to Aldi, Woolworths, schools, doctors... basically everything we need for day-to-day living. It's peaceful, quiet, and almost pest-free (we get some spiders now and then, but not a lot).

Due to the lack of trees in the area, we get some very beautiful skylines, and traffic in West Macgregor is virtually non-existent. The houses in New Macgregor are close to each other, making it virtually impossible not to bump into your neighbours every now and then - which is a good thing, as there are many friendly people in the area who are worth getting to know. The area is mostly safe and sound, although there have been some minor property thefts over the past few months.

Regarding transport: There is a bike path from Macgregor to Belconnen runs up Umbagong District Park and along Ginnindera Creek, which is a wonderful ride. The mechanic at Magregor shops runs an authorised Repco shop that provides excellent service. The 44 and 343 buses both drive by quite frequently, so public transport is decent.

The only down side is that my partner and I are having some issues finding decent day care facilities in the area. We're not a fan of the YMCA Holt, and the nearest options thereafter seem to be in Charnwood - ones that don't seem to have very good ratings from the ACECQA.

"Best Compromise in Canberra for being Quiet, Safe, Green and Close to Everything"

My partner and I moved here for a Govt job I was offered in Belconnen. Belconnen Town is being upgraded a lot, with the shopping centre (Westfield) and local parks getting huge elaborate revamps. The lifestyle is worth it, even if the rent is a little higher than normal. Buses are everywhere in and around Page, and a short ride down the footpath and you end up on some bike path eventually. The people around us are really nice, keeping to themselves but friendly when approached. There are a lot of schools around Page, being near Hawker, Macgregor and Weetangera, so that would be great for kids. I have never seen a cockroach in our house since we moved in, but we do get a few spiders during the summer. Heaps of local sports, fetes and community get-togethers going on all the time!

Great for

  • Friendly, convenient, recreational, community events, public transport, near parks

Not great for

  • Rent and House Prices are a little high
  • Could do with a few more bike paths
