Benalla

"a try-hard town that partially makes it"

The place works for a country town. Nice lake (that can flood the town due to bad planning), art gallery, old-ish swimming pool center and a small airport. Main street full of shops. Schools are good.

Castlemaine

"Town with character"

This place has some history and some nice buildings in the area. Considering it is in such a dry part of the country-side it is a nice enough place to live.45 minutes to Bendigo and 1-5 - 2 hrs to Melbourne. Generally nice and quite.

"A country town with good attractions"

lived there a few years back. nice town with friendly residents. Good place to raise a family. Gets busy in snow season, but that is one of the bonuses of the place. beauty countryside to drive around. Nice wineries to visit.
Melbourne is not too far away for when you need a dose of big-city life for a weekend.

Golden Square

"Good area"

Lived there a few years back. Nice place. Bendigo has everything you yant, just on a smaller scale than Melbourne (which is only 2ish hours drive away). Great eating out, and the best pad thai we have had anywhere in Australia. Water restrictions ment the place was a bit dry and dusty, but other than that, a nice place.

Jabiru Street

"OK Darwin suburb"

Wulagi is nice enough for Darwin. Most people have the 6 foot high fence with every second house having dogs that bark every time you walk past.
Nice friendly neighbours in the area though.
Eary fast access to Casuarina shops and Hybiscus shops.

"Lovely leafy suburb"

Great suburb with giant street trees and nice parks. Beautiful houses on large blocks.
The question.... can you afford it?

Seaton

"A mixed suburb"

Seaton is a strange one. The southern end is all privatly owned, has a golf course etc. The northern end is largely housing trust, has streets which turn into carparks all football season, and has regular visits by police.
We lived there (northern end) for almost 5 years in a privat house. We had good friendly neighbours, but just 6 houses down the trouble areas started. We used to go for evening walks but stopped that a couple of years ago as we began feeling unsafe. We moved as we dont want to raise a family in that environment.
There is excellent access to busses and the train. Easy access to Port Rd and Taplies Hill Rd. If you like fotie, you can walk to AAMI stadium. Good shops at Wetlakes (but watch for carpark safety after dark).
Like I said, it's a strange area. A mix of good and bad.

Ethelton

"Good family area"

Ethelton is a good family suburb close to busier areas. Properties are mostly of a decent size (not like the modern dog-box, wall sharing devellopments) with plenty of trees around. A few good local pubs with dinning areas, nice bakery/coffee shop, and frienly local butcher with quality products. The train is 5-10 minutes walk, buses down the main streets, and easy access to Port Rd, Military Rd and Grand Junction Rd. The beach is 20 minutes walk, and several schools and childcare centres are in the area. Not much night life, but that is what the city is for. And who wants noisy clubs and neighbours next door anyway.
Internet is very fast in this area, but mobile reception can be reduced inside the typical double brick houses.
There is always a refreshing breeze this close to the coast.
