"Great country town, loved by locals and 'inner north' migrants"

After living in Fitzroy for 6 years we recently made the tree change and settled in Castlemaine. It could still be the honeymoon period but we absolutely love this place. There are some great coffee shops and restaurants to meet the needs of a foodie, fantastic markets to buy locally grown produce and arts, and the cycling around here is outstanding. Whether you are into road, gravel or mountain biking, its awesome. Oh, and not to forget about the great two local breweries and friendly pubs. I commute to the city by train, which is super easy. The train ride is a bit more expensive than I thought, costing about $4000 for an annual unlimited commute. The drive into the city is also quite easy, but I prefer the train. And yes, the supermarket is expensive, but the range is really good, not too dissimilar to Piedemonte in Fitzroy North.

"View from here"

Castlemaine is community. There's a whole bunch of people who are really into their thing doing their thing here. And they all get on, in the 'maine. It's looked over by applely Mt Alexander and vintage Leanganook, a stone's throw from misty Mt Franklin and Daylesford. It's got doctors, swimming holes, golf courses, mtb tracks, and goldfields galore, it's got cafes, a few knock out restaurants, a lot of okay ones. It's got people who'll talk to you on the street in the sun, people who'll dance with you. It's got people to hot rod and rockabilly with, people to yoga with, people to meditate with. It's got a hospital to heal you, and a bunch of watering holes to set the long afternoons amber. You can listen to poets or quiet or to live bands. The winters get fair drawn in so, be prepared, but the green chill has blue skies - the frosts are bracing, but the fires are warm and thermals are cheap, and chopping wood 'l get you hot anyhow. The train'll take you to Melbourne in under 1hr and a half, and the Conductors express will get you back in just over an hour in the busy afternoon. Cinema? Check. Close to Bendigo? Check. Expensive and monopolized IGA? Check! But really? How much of our experience is about how we notice where we are? how much do we make our own place to live? Sure, take a look, and you might see something completely different.

"A better Alternative than living in the Burbs"

Castlemaine has grown from an industrial hub in central Victoria to a Tree Change destination bursting with cultural depth and real community spirit. Fast Rail to Southern Cross station is 1hr and 5 mins on the morning express service, making it an easy commute to those that work in the CBD of Melbourne.

"Town with character"

This place has some history and some nice buildings in the area. Considering it is in such a dry part of the country-side it is a nice enough place to live.45 minutes to Bendigo and 1-5 - 2 hrs to Melbourne. Generally nice and quite.
