Launceston

"Drab town, parking garbage"

I don't know why people (locals) boast about Launceston. The city itself is drab with old 'heritage' listed dumps of buildings or others painted grey to camouflage in the background where it's mostly foggy and drab weather. Try to get a park anywhere in the city. Pay top dollar and still walk for miles. Plenty of vacant shops in Launceston where interstate people have tried to introduce something new to this backward town, failed, packed up and gone home. Try to get a new business through Launceston city council and they will block it (Big W is a prime example). Devonport has more going for it.

Ugly and drab is a fair description of Launceston.

Great for

  • Affordability

Not great for

  • Can be cold in the peak of winter - you need to make sure you have adequate heating

Thanks mate, I live in Launceston. Some big city twit like you isn't going to tread on my town. Launceston is made to be quiet. We actually like to relax and not just keep going all the time. You can shut up and leave us be.

I live in Launceston too. I am entitled to my opinion, just as you are. This is my view on it. I have lived all around Australia too and i'm not some 'big city twit' - no need for personal name calling.

I still can't believe that Launceston doesn't have a Big W and from what I have heard it never will due to certain members of council who continuely block any form of positive development, I still enjoy going to Tassie in order to see family but if I was to move back Launceston wouldn't be on the list of potential locations to reside, on a positive note though I do like the lack of traffic that Launceston has along with a 5 minute peak each morning and afternoon, although you never get stuck in traffic.

Do people still drive to Hobart just to go shopping or to Big W and Rebel Sport inparticular? That is my biggest gripe about the place, no real shopping options.

All big w and those other shops do is kill small family business. Customer service is appalling with those kind of shops whereas you build relationships with the people running the shops. Full time work is lost as these companies only employ people casual/part time. Is it worth all this so you can purchase $2 thongs? Not from tassie but looking to move there. From Wollongong originally now campbelltown

I agree Happt, Launceston is a shitty little town that has grown a little too big for its boots.

I moved to Launceston six months ago after not being able to find somewhere to rent in Hobart. Lived in Hobart for 47 years then a boom arrives and as I'm poor nothing left there for me. People in Launceston are friendly and kind, no one has been rude or unkind to me (I use two walking sticks or a wheelchair) people in Hobart have been rude and extremely unkind and made my life hell. I'm glad to be in Launceston. Yes the shopping isn't very exciting but I've found awesome things at the Launceston tip shop and the rest of the Launceston city mission stores are amazing as well, so many treasures. Good restaurants are generally very expensive and 'cheap eats' are pig swill, but there's recipes all over the internet, so learn to make great food at home. It has been difficult to find a good bulk billing doctor but I've done that so I'm satisfied. Life can be peaceful and kind here it's all about what you need from life. At least there is the internet so shop online!

Visitor from Melb . Have to disagree Launceston is drab and ugly Some of these buildings beautifully restored predate any in VIC and so many ! I find people kind and easy going too . Good words Emily ! And Emmam . You have to leave a place it seems to appreciate what ya had . I came from Warrnambool to work in City & so appreciate the relaxed vibe of a country town now . Btw traffic is worse there ( pop 35000) than here ! And of course all Tasmania is beautiful
