"great to be so close to the city but also have a real family community feel - kids can be kids!"
First moving here we worried we wouldn't fit in as we were from the eastern suburbs. Immediately our kids found friends in the neighbourhood who invited themselves over and our neighbours were walking into our yard totally unannounced and were always ready with a helping hand when we needed it especially when settling in. They didn't just bring us a cake, they organised a neighbourhood afternoon tea to welcome us! We were taken back at first feeling a bit overwhelmed when suddenly we realised we aren't in the eastern suburbs anymore and around here people don't just say...'i'm a bit busy, maybe we could bring Geoffrey for a play in about two months as he has to practice for his recital...or...I should go over and say hi to the new neighbours but i'm a bit busy and they probably need a bit of space to get sorted...etc etc....this area has changed who we are...and who we want our kids to be.....(and it's groceries and well everything actually is about half the price of the eastern and northern suburbs!!!)....and we now have chickens!
Who lives here?

Good luck HelenaT. I wish you well :)
Hope its going well for you :) We too were poor posh suburb refugees and after living here for five years, we wouldn't live anywhere else! ( Well maybe Majorca!) ;)
Next week, we move from an overpriced coastal suburb go to live in Arncliffe. One daughter thinks it's embarrassing. Another family member politely asked if it would be a 'bit of a challenge".
My first thoughts: this is a suburb where people might talk to each other and neighbours might connect. The old-fashioned kinda neighbourhood that cities don't necessarily have anymore. I'm hoping we will have a similar experience to knixy.
Arncliffe has views, I've always lived on the flat so this is new. I like the federation architecture - I think Arncliffe has yet to be discovered and I hope it never is.
Where we live now, no-one talks to anyone and it's like living in a cemetery. Well, one person talks to us - the pedantic, humorless, retentive body corporate representative, who is a vexatious complainer. She's a smiling assassin. She will not be missed.
And the people next door? In three years they have never pulled up their blinds. I don't even know what they look like. I know what they don't like. Gardening. They took a chainsaw to the native shrubs along the common fenceline. I'm not going to miss them either.
I don't care too much about the lack of nightlife thing in Arncliffe. Let's face it, most suburban residents have to go somewhere else for that.
Well, when we've moved in and the dust has settled, I'll post a review. Fingers crossed.
