Have found it relatively safe, close to the parks, convenient but still quiet and less of the King St buzz. Alice st can be a little busy at rush hour but it's not too bad at all, only two lanes, and much better than living near a main rd like Parramatta Rd or Euston Rd in Alexandria (have lived there). Even better if you live set back from the street.

Have lived in Newtown for 3 years or so.
Love the area - great food, parks, convenience, culture, community.
Would advise looking for a place with off-street parking, as I did.
I like my part of Newtown, down the South side of King st towards Marrickville/Erskineville where the streets are quiet but still close to everything.
