Camberwell

"A good enviroment to raise kids"

It seems affluence is sought for but not obtained here, everyone is a wanna-be but not there yet! Courtesy is near non existent, on the roads, in shops, carparks, on footpaths and as a mother with a pram and toddler everywhere I go, it's more obvious to me than others I suspect. Heaps to do with children and access with public transport excellent.

Who lives here?

  • Professionals
  • Families with kids

I would have to agree with you. My husband and I purchased a house in Hawthorn East in 2010 and we border on Camberwell and I must say I have never in my life come across an area so full of rude obnoxious people.
It is mainly populated by crusty old cardigan wearing anglosaxons and seriously lacks in good restaurants and cafes, is full of garbage overpriced shops, lacks in ethnic diversity, class and has an overall dull vibe.
We are a young professional couple with a little one and and we are constantly asked if we are renting? The assumption seems to be that one must be a daggy redneck pretending to be rich I guess to live in such an 'exclusive' part of town.

We grew up in Hawthorn in which unlike camberwell, the truly affluent reside and people seem to be so much friendlier and tolerant.

Wouldn't recommend Camberhell...

I am very sorry to hear of your unfortunate experience in Camberwell Polly83.
It is not the most pleasant suburb in my view in terms of people and amenities. I was on Burke road with my mother and the vibe was one of ostracization, hostility etc...very unwelcoming...

I had coffee in Toorak village once, drove through Monomeath avenue and Mont Albert road Canterbury and have been through Hawthorn and Hawthorn East for a friend's birthday celebration- in hindsight, they are the best suburbs in terms of genuine hallmarks of true affluence and success as opposed to fake wannabe wealth and being a showoff, thankyou Orangebear.

People consistently state that Toorak is the most unpleasant place, I say the exact opposite. It has stability, structures in place and beautiful architecture and the people are OK. As is Canterbury and Hawthorn/Hawthorn East.

Those who dislike Toorak people in my view come from Camberwell- pathetically jealous and try to copy their successes without fruition.

"crusty old cardigan wearing anglosaxons" you mentioned Polly83; being Chinese and born in Australia, I should be free and within my right to purchase property anywhere. What a total piece of dull moronic residents they are in 3124...yeesh...and they're crusty because they write their own self-righteous comments in editorials hinging about how bad everything is. It is not.

Grow up and wake up residents of C***wh***hell...there is a bigger world out there in Melbourne and Australia!!!

I agree - Camberwell now is full of unfriendly snobs and empty houses.
