Willagee

"Close to Fremantle and shopping districts, friendly spirit, really up-and-coming"

This suburb is undergoing major redevelopment, and is a good buy. You can still buy a good-sized block (not subdivided to death!), with a good-sized house on it for a reasonable price. Many of the older parts of Willagee are being sold and redeveloped, which is good to see.

The main shopping strip on Archibald is also being revitalized, there are several new shops (including a new cafe which is quite nice!), the local IGA has undergone major changes, and the fish&chips and the bakery are pretty decent (we have an out-of-state friend who swears that the pie shop is the best he's had). However, if you need to really satisfy your shopping bug, it is only 10 minutes to Garden City or downtown Fremantle.

The neighbors say "hello" on their morning and evening strolls, and the local community center and church are active in the community, holding several fetes a year.

Wish the public transport was more efficient, and that there was a local medical doctor in addition to the chemist and the dentist in the local plaza.

Edit: based on feedback from c_lam, there is a medical doctor at the end of Archibald street in some shops there.

Thanks to c_lam for this comment on my review:

My husband and I have lived in Willagee for 3 and a half years and have absolutely loved setting up our home in this up and coming suburb.

Willagee is an extremely central location. So close to the river and beach we share many enjoyable experiences with family and friends without having to travel great distances. There are many shopping facilities available with local shops on central Archibald St. The pharmacy, butcher and bakery are all particularly welcoming and within walking distance to all homes in the area. However, there are many larger shopping centres close by, such as Garden City, Woolworths, Limes, Fremantle and Kardinya Shopping Centre, plus many large homewares stores are located near Willagee. There is a local school in Willagee, plus many government and independent schools accessible. There is a medical clinic located on Archibald Street, as well as a large medical centre on South Street. Willagee is abundant with beautiful parks and ovals. Although the parks are an added bonus to the already large blocks that are now getting hard to find in other suburbs.

Unfortunately Willagee has a stigma from previous years, but what you experience when you are a member of the Willagee community is very different to it's preceding reputation. Before you place an offer on any property it is important to attain information regarding the neighbours, regardless of where you are buying in. That being said, even as the neighbours have changed over the years we have always been surrounded by friendly people who all look out for each other. We have never had any problem with security or safety.
