There are some better areas to Richmond, but steer clear of anywhere near the station - or Station end of Swan Street, or around Victoria Street. These areas are certainly the darker side of town.......prostitutes and the open selling of drugs are common place. I would never walk in these areas alone or at night. Beware!

Drugs on Victoria Street, yes, but I've never seen the junkies interfere with anyone, they just loiter. This kind of thing is unavoidable and happens in places you wouldn't expect. I eat out on Vic Street most weeks and have NEVER had a problem. When the restaurants are open it's bustling, friendly and safe.
Now with the drug injecting room it has become considerably worse. Not a good place for kids.
Would not recommend living in Richmond
"Carlton - right in the centre of everything"
Carlton is a fantastic place to live. Everything that Lygon St has to offer ..... food, shops cinema, and only 5 minutes walk to the CBD! I have never felt uncomfortable nor unsafe in Carlton. The shops are always bustling, although not too busy, and the restaurants of a night time are vibrant. I cant think of a better place in Melbourne to live!
Traffic in Lygon Street can by a little busy, but certainly nothing like the street of other nearby areas such as Richmond etc. I have never had a problem getting a park - although I must admit, once you live in Carlton there is little need for a car....you can walk everywhere!

Ridiculous comment. Victoria street is very much noteorious for drugs but I have never seen any of what you suggest on Swan st and I have lived in Richmond for 12 years. Stop making up lies.
