Kiama

"A beautiful town."

Kiama is a really nice place. The locals are friendly and you feel as if you don't need to lock your car. There are numerous trendy places to dine and the town has great beaches and oodles of charm.

The Private school is very nice and the shopping complex is adequate, if a little expensive.

My only gripe is that it's nye on impossible to get petrol afterhours.

Great for

  • Beautiful town.
  • Well known tourism center.

Not great for

  • Getting petrol.
  • Some of the housing is cramped.

Warrawong

"Good if the government is paying your rent."

Warrawong is close to wollongong and has a large shopping complex, yet it's not somewhere you would want to live. The streets are unsafe at night, and even the shopping complex can be rough. The pollution from the steelworks leaves a dirty silt on everything and I would hate to bring up a child there.

Great for

  • Close to wollongong
  • Good shopping center

Not great for

  • Too many junkies
  • Lots of Housing Commisssion
  • Dirty from the steelworks

Warrawong is a nice suburb to live in, close to shops and bigger ones like domayne etc..beach close by and lake, I felt safe walking at night no problems...I havent seen many junkies, you get them anywhere you go! yes you wash your car one day then the next its dirty again. The Port Kembla beach is far better than Wollongong beach.

Shell Cove

"Stylish, friendly and excellent town planning."

Location:
Shell Cove is a beachside suburb just South of Shellharbour, East of Flinders and Blackbutt and North of Dunmore and adjoins one of the world's top 50 golf courses. The town planning also includes the long awaited and highly controversial Shell Cove Marina, which is currently scheduled for completion after 2020.

Geographical features:
Due to the favourable geographic positioning, most houses in Shell Cove enjoy fresh sea breezes and feature Golf Course Views, Ocean Views, Escarpment views or views over the Killalea State National Park.

Streets:
If you value copious amounts of on-street parking then Shell Cove's roads may not initially apeal to you. But look deeper into the town's careful planning and your opinion might be swayed.

While the streets of Shell Cove aren't as wide as those in traditional suburbs like Shellharbour, you will also notice they aren't lined with parked cars, hence offering more driving space and better visibility. Through strict town planning, all residences in Shell Cove are built with ample parking. Also, the major public reserves have dedicated parking bays so you can still bring the extended family for a barbecue with plenty of parking available.

To contrast this, take a short trip into the neighbouring suburb of Flinders and one is immediately confronted with skinny streets lined with poorly parked cars that make it hard to navigate safely. It also hurts the suburb's image, since it's usually the family rustbucket that gets delegated to on-street parking. I hate to sound so superficial, but I don't see why you would landscape and render your nice new house, just to have your neighbour park their rusty truck in front of it.

People may complain about it, but keeping the cars off the street makes for a tidier, more family friendly suburb and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Amenities:
Shell cove is a short drive from the Stocklands Shellharbour shopping center, and has its own medical center under construction. The links golf course is a great place to hang out and enjoy a beer or some fine dining with a view. The public school is centrally located, reputable and tidy. ALso, the Shellharbour Anglican College is located nearby and also holds a high reputation.

DoHC:
According to the land office, there is and will be no Department of Housing Commission residences in Shell Cove.

Great for

  • Beautiful, tidy suburb
  • Safe, quiet streets
  • Located next to golf course

Not great for

  • The marina won't be finished for some time yet.

Who lives here?

Warilla

"Warilla East and Warilla West."

Warilla is a beachside suburb located between the growing City of wollongong and the increasingly affluent suburbs of Kiama and Shellharbour.

Divided by Shellharbour Road, the suburb is split into two contrasting regions. The East (beachside) of Warilla boasts high end real estate, safe streets and a positive, upbeat populace while parts of the West are riddled with ex-commission firbo housing. Front lawns are adorned with rusting car parts and unsupervised barefooted toddlers roam the backstreets scowling at passing traffic.

Because of this duality, it is risky to trust statistics that encompass the entire suburb. As always, due diligence is necessary, and investors should be forewarned not to paint the whole postcode with the same brush.

Great for

  • Nice Beaches
  • Tidy small business district

Not great for

  • Everything West of Shellharbour Road.
