"Not a bad place to live, lacks a bit in services and privacy, has great parks and cycleways for the whole family."

Have only lived here a year after previously living in Minnamurra and in Sydney. Yes the streets are narrow but I suppose that is the way of current and future planning for all new estates and should challenge the dominance of the car...the walking tracks and cycleways and gardens are all well maintained and despite the view from the outside of the estate, there is actuallly many quiet forested places within the estate, where you quickly forget you are surrounded by a thousand homes. Hopefully the landscaping improves the look of the estate over time and assists with privacy as well.

I'm not too concerned whether the marina is built or not, I would trade that for more direct access to the beach, it is too far to walk everyday despite the sales pitch! The estate lacks the feel of Shellharbour Village and Kiama/Minnamurra in that it is just a suburb and ddoes not have that laidback character of the other places and that is it's downfall for me. That and unlike some others this place doesn't fit the dream for me! The fact I can see into 2 neighbouring backyards from my deck is also a significant downfall and moreso for my neighbours no doubt, but nothing landscaping can't fix. There is also a bit of an attitude that I detect from others here that they believe they are better than the surrounding areas and this annoys me. I can't see a difference between here and Flinders and enjoy walking over there as well.

Having the new GP clinic down the road will be handy though we could do with some shopping facilities. The golf club is a nice place for a beer and the food there is good as well. Easy to walk into Shellharbour for some really good food options.

Overall the planning and management for this place is generally pretty good but there are just some places where it misses the mark. Australand and Council need to realise people will only believe the sales pitch for so long and they should just get on and do things like establishing a more direct access to the beach.

Great for

  • Great parklands and pathways
  • Beautiful, tidy suburb
  • Safe, quiet streets

Not great for

  • Lack of privacy
  • Sales pitch and reality are far apart

Your review is absolutly right the only thing that Shell Cove has that is better, is its name otherwise Flinders has bigger streets, bigger blocks of land, friendlier atmosphere!!

"Shell Cove Marina - The Shellharbour Marina"

A touch of class ❤️ The Marina is finally open after 30 years of planning! How beautiful and it’s on our door step… The new Waterfront restaurants, the walkways and then general buzz of happiness! Well worth the wait, I say ❤️

"Fantastic seaside suburb"

Shell Cove has developed into a thriving seaside suburb in recent years. It is one if the only suburbs I know in the Illawarra that offers quality housing so close to the sea with a fantastic town centre. I love that you can cycle to the Marina from anywhere in Shell Cove taking one of the beautiful paths throughout the suburb. The local primary school is also excellent. Commuting is also manageable as Shell Cove is just next to the highway (without hearing the highway at all!) and I look forward to the opening of the Albion Bypass. Shellharbour junction station is also close by if you want to catch the train north! If you get hold of one of the older (but all excellent quality built) houses in the suburb, you get decent size plots with generous garden space.

"Blocks are too small!"

The land sizes are small! And houses are built so close to the boundary. The streets are narrow.

"Great place to live."

I have lived in Shell Cove for 2 years now. The housing here is of a high standed and so are the people that live here. Shell Cove is a very well planned estate protected by strict building covernets. Yes the streets are a little narrow but the houses here are built to allow 4 cars to be parked on the property, unlike Flinders. I love the access to parks and Killalea Beach. The new GP Superclinic is fantastic. I have reasonably good wireless internet speed and mobile phone reception. The proximity to Stockland Shellharbour, Shellharbour Village, Kiama and the Southern Tablelands is a great plus. Public Transport is well catered for with regular bus services, Shellharbour Railway Station just down the road.

Great for

  • Beautiful, tidy suburb
  • Safe, quiet streets
  • Great parklands and pathways
  • Located next to golf course

"Stylish, friendly and excellent town planning."

Location:
Shell Cove is a beachside suburb just South of Shellharbour, East of Flinders and Blackbutt and North of Dunmore and adjoins one of the world's top 50 golf courses. The town planning also includes the long awaited and highly controversial Shell Cove Marina, which is currently scheduled for completion after 2020.

Geographical features:
Due to the favourable geographic positioning, most houses in Shell Cove enjoy fresh sea breezes and feature Golf Course Views, Ocean Views, Escarpment views or views over the Killalea State National Park.

Streets:
If you value copious amounts of on-street parking then Shell Cove's roads may not initially apeal to you. But look deeper into the town's careful planning and your opinion might be swayed.

While the streets of Shell Cove aren't as wide as those in traditional suburbs like Shellharbour, you will also notice they aren't lined with parked cars, hence offering more driving space and better visibility. Through strict town planning, all residences in Shell Cove are built with ample parking. Also, the major public reserves have dedicated parking bays so you can still bring the extended family for a barbecue with plenty of parking available.

To contrast this, take a short trip into the neighbouring suburb of Flinders and one is immediately confronted with skinny streets lined with poorly parked cars that make it hard to navigate safely. It also hurts the suburb's image, since it's usually the family rustbucket that gets delegated to on-street parking. I hate to sound so superficial, but I don't see why you would landscape and render your nice new house, just to have your neighbour park their rusty truck in front of it.

People may complain about it, but keeping the cars off the street makes for a tidier, more family friendly suburb and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Amenities:
Shell cove is a short drive from the Stocklands Shellharbour shopping center, and has its own medical center under construction. The links golf course is a great place to hang out and enjoy a beer or some fine dining with a view. The public school is centrally located, reputable and tidy. ALso, the Shellharbour Anglican College is located nearby and also holds a high reputation.

DoHC:
According to the land office, there is and will be no Department of Housing Commission residences in Shell Cove.

Great for

  • Beautiful, tidy suburb
  • Safe, quiet streets
  • Located next to golf course

Not great for

  • The marina won't be finished for some time yet.

I have lived in Blackutt (Shellharbour) for 5 years and now im making 3 years in Shell Cove and i can say that Blackbutt totally ***SMASHES*** Shell Cove.

POINTS FOR: modern homes; nice entrance; new suburb; close to beach; parks; 1 corner shop.

POINTS AGAINST: tight streets; poor parking; company homes; cemetry next door; very bad mobile reception; poor internet quality; very high land rates; small blocks.

"Not a Very Good Suburb to Live In!"

Shellcove is a suburb that can be found in the area of Shellharbour. With very narrow streets (hard to park when visiting friends/relatives. The densly situated homes, makes it very hard to have your own privacy (its very rare to find a home or block where your neighbours cant see into your yard because of their home being so close to the boundary. Most of the blocks a very small making the backyards even smaller. Even though beautiful homes have been built, most home types consist of company homes which can make you feel like your living in an Tract housing development (a style of housing development in which multiple identical homes are built on a tract of land which is subdivided into individual small blocks). Even though the suburb is the closest to the beach out of the three major suburbs (Flinders & Blackbutt), its the furthest away from medical, sporting and shopping facility. The suburb is seen by many as overpriced considering all the flaws it has. The "fabulous" entrance and "fancy" streetlights doesnt make the suburb any better than neigbouring Flinders & Blackbutt!

OVERALL RATING, is not very accurate.

Internet access = poor (cannot get ADSL+2)
Cost of Living = expensive (high land rates, small blocks)
Neigbourly Spirit = poor (everybody stays inside no communication between neigbours)
Medical Facilities = average (furthest away from Shellharbour Hospital/Medical Centres)
Nightlife = poor (shops close early, 30-40 mins away from city (Wollongong)

sallycergs

P.S My house is going to be up for sale. Cant wait to move out!

-You can still get ADSL1 at 8MBit/sec. Some ADSL2+ users don't even get this speed.
-I feel that the neighbourly spirit is great. Everyone is so friendly and looks out for each other. Especially around christmas.
-As for medical facilities, they're building a medical center on the main street. How close do you want it?
-And 30-40mins from the city? Are you riding a bycicle? It takes me 21minutes in Peak hour traffic each morning to get to Wollongong. Cristy how long does it take you to get to wollongong?

Oh well, at least your resale will be good.

Hi Guys

Just bought a property in fairways drive. I am about to move to Shell Cove from Sydney. Was just wondering if anyone can advise the average rates and taxes per quarter for Shell Cove. Also if someone can advise the best Internet\Broadband, electricity and Gas providers in the area. I have also discovered that Foxtel does not provide services in this area and that I would have to go with AUSTAR, Is this correct? Lastly can anybody please advise a good Garden Service in the area. Thank you
