With 53 winter days on the Venice, Santa Monica border, I'm looking for non-guidebook ideas.

I love exploring neighborhoods with creative people and shops. Artisan bakeries, organic markets, art galleries, maybe antique shops, quirky imaginative places, fringe theater and music. Things like these but of high quality. Luxury not necessary, but talent and taste, yes.

I've only been to Santa Monica and Venice once, but from what I hear from friends who have lived in both, you will probably find Venice too grungy. I hear the crime rate there is also a lot higher, so you might be better off living in Santa Monica and just driving over to Venice.
