It's not nice at all
Most of it isn't bad, but it IS sketchy on 170th between Audubon and Amsterdam. Or it was in 2010, at least at night. I lived right in the middle of that block for a year and a half and found out later by a random guy trying to sell me drugs that it was known as the "drug block" and that any drug could apparently be found there. I walked by deals on that block most nights if I was coming home late, but no one actually bothered me. They honestly don't care if you don't bother them. It's sketch though. There was also a shooting on my corner (170th/Amsterdam). Amsterdam Ave borders Highbridge Park and the eastern areas (including the areas near that park) are not exactly that great. Anyway, just avoid it. Haha, unless you're trying to get any type of drug on the "drug block." If you're looking for apartments, head west.
It's home to a huge community of people living in NYC, raising their children, being part of a community. Most of that community is Dominican but there is also a huge mix of other Hispanics, orthodox Jews, white students and professionals, medical school students, teachers, writers, etc. Your answer is essentially wrong and elitist and possibly even racist. To disparage an entire huge part of NYC as "not nice" makes me wonder just how much you appreciate the unbelievable mixture of people in NYC neighborhoods. Sure there are certain blocks where teenage boys sell marijuana and where a few Hispanic men make eyes at beautiful girls, but threre is also a lively community of law-abiding, hard-working, working class and middle class people. Get your realities straight.
