Hey Melinda--my ex really likes the Philosopher's Club on Portola. Its sort of dive but is a lot of fun. The bartenders are really cool, but don't hit on Josh, his fiancee will put you in the hospital. (Josh is cute though--don't hurt me Emma!)
Okay, and if you prefer a more traditional pub, there are handful of those as well:

Why is it that I always have a half dozen recommendations when someone asks about bars. Am I that much of a wino?
