Is there much road noise from the motorway

West Wollongong in general is a very quiet suburb.
The noise from the M1 is minimal as the traffic is flowing and the RMS have installed concrete sound barriers to help.
Tourist Drive (Mt Keira Road) is relatively unused, even in the summer months. It's mainly used by locals with the occasional tourists venturing to the top - most use Mt Ousley road and the turn-off at the top instead.

The only exception to this, would the annual Charity event called Convoy - at the beginning of November that sees a multitude of trucks and cars on the freeway for a couple of hours on a Sunday morning - but as it raises over $1m for charity and the streets are lined with spectators, it's something that everyone is happy to hear and see :)
