I would disagree 100%. I located what I thought was a great apartment 4 blocks west from the Damen stop. I looked at the apartment during the day, and while the sidewalk wasn't that clean, the new gut rehab apartment was great on the inside. After moving in, and living there for a week, I noticed that there were gang bangers living across the street. Loitering and littering. One work night they were so loud, I had to call the cops. 911 literally told me I should be careful as I could be shot. They said they would send a squad, but to be careful. Two weeks later, I again had to call the cops. My renters insurance DOUBLED with the statement I had moved to an unsafe area of Chicago. My new young female Neighboor said she was happy when she first moved in, but had to start taking alternative routes home as she was being followed and harassed by these same people. A walk to the actual Wicker Park one day I viewed 5 bums with all of their homeless openings congregating in the center if the park by the fountain.
Within 1 month, I canceled my lease and move the heck out. So... Proceeded with caution.
I would consider Wicker Park quite safe, though a friend of mine who is a bit more in tune with this stuff says that every street corner has a prostitute. Apparently I'm not paying enough attention, but I never feel unsafe.
Wicker Park is considered a safe neighborhood. Most people walk the neighborhood all hours of the day and night. Most of the reported crimes in this area are for misdemeanors such as fraud or theft.
