Reviews of Ashburton, VIC

"Picturesque Period Homes, Modern Luxury & Community"

Ashburton was for quite some time, one of the most underrated south eastern suburbs. This was not because people knew it and didn’t like it, it was because they didn’t know it in the first place. This wonderfully sleepy suburb has awoken but has managed to maintain its integrity in doing so. It has seen enormous capital growth and improvements in the past decade as people have become aware of what the area provides.

It offers the most beautiful and quaint period homes whilst merging considerately with luxurious modern homes. It is a perfect blend of community & lifestyle and enables professionals’ brilliant access to the city and surrounds at the same time. Bike and walking trails, parks, recreation facilities, rivers and an abundance of large leafy trees help refresh and reinvigorate its residents. ‘Ashburton Village’ is the beating heart of suburb and offers the absolute highest quality fruit & veg shops, bakeries, cafes and a sprinkling of well-considered restaurants.

You will absolutely LOVE living here.

"A brilliant location"

Ten years ago, we knocked down our renovated, comfortable ex commission home to build a larger family home. We didn't really want to move and it was the better option at the time. Ashburton then was becoming popular due to its excellent access to transport, shopping and excellent schools and it's proximity to wealthier Glen Iris and East Malvern. Our kids have now grown up and have wonderful careers thanks to our decision and the wonderful access and choice of schools. Government funding has provided a magnificent Pool and Recreation Centre within walking distance, child care centre, medical and dental bulk-billed facility for locals and a manned Police Station. The magnificent new playground on Victory Blvd has parents flocking from all over due to its uniqueness and fun including BBQ facilities and endless grassed surrounding areas that are dog friendly. We have the lot in Ashy Shopping Strip on High Street, great cafes, NQR, top takeaways and the freshest produce outside the markets. The old commission homes are slowly being knocked down and family homes and townhouses are becoming the norm. The area has become extremely popular and why not, it has it all!

"A wonderful place to live"

This is the suburb I grew up in - 30 years ago now. I can remember countless weekends and school holidays spent riding my bike around the pleasant green streets. It was great then, and even better now. Back then it was, despite its great location, a very affordable suburb. Prices have certainly skyrocketed here, and the suburb is much more up-market these days. The modest block my parents bought for around $50,000 in the early eighties would easily be worth $800,000 today. We lived a very short walk from Alamein station - back when proximity to a train station was considered a no-no. But there was never a problem because being the last stop on the line meant the train would always pull up and leave very slowly and quietly. We never once heard the train despite living maybe a couple of hundred metres from it. Of course today, being close to a station is almost considered a plus.

At the time there was a fair number of free-standing commission houses in Ashburton (the cheap bare-wire waist-high fences were a giveaway) but most if not all of these have now been sold off. Stay to the west of the train line though! It's a whole different story on the other side where there are still a lot of commission flats and all the lovely things associated with that...

The local High St. shopping strip is nice and convenient if perhaps a bit limited, and the Woolworths on the corner of High St and Warrigal is a very good one.

The unbeatable location and quiet, leafy, almost village-like atmosphere make this a superb place for living and raising a family.

"Quiet Family Area"

Ashburton is a lovely area.
Being in the roof restoration industry, i work in and around this area.
I love the big blocks, different styles of housing and the quiet and leafy streets.

Cheers,

"Perfect place for a family"

Ashburtons' standout feature is its location. The combination of access to education/health services, shopping, transport and the city are amoung the best in Melbourne.

A lot of the suburb is post world war 2 housing for returning veterians (the street names are a give way...). These are progessively being renovated or replaced and younger families have moved in.

There is a substantial amount of sub-division of the old larger blocks going on at the moment. Ashburton has some stand alone and high density public housing which is one of the reasons it has never been as desirable as, for example, Glen Iris.

Ashburton has a large shopping strip that has grown remarkably in the last 5 years. Many locals in the area think Ashburton will eventually be very similar to what Camberwell is like now.

"Nice houses, great shopping and close to the city"

Some of the best shops in the area, easy access to the city on the freeway and an easy trip out of the city makes this one of the best spots in Melbourne.
The area is well serviced by public transport if you’re not a driver so you can get to the city easily.
There are some great parks and playgrounds in the area making it very family friendly. Just take them over and then let them tire themselves out. For families with kids this is one of the easiest ways to remain sane.
For the cyclist, there is a bike track that runs into the city. No more running the gauntlet on main roads.
There are some great houses in the area so you’re sure to find what you need regardless of what you are looking for.
