Reviews of Austin Street, Hughesdale
"Austin Street Hughesdale - Changing Rapidly"
Austin St along with Simmonds St, and Brine St's are going through considerable change. Once viewed as the' less desirable' streets in Hughesdale, they are now being highly sought after and it is no surprise. These streets have quite a few old housing commission properties which are now being knocked over and replaced by large modern family homes and townhouses. Austin St is going through considerable change and will be largely unrecognisable in the coming years. The old concrete housing commission properties were prefabricated in a munitions factory that had manufactured tanks during the Second World War. The factory was located where it is now Holmesglen TAFE. Many of these homes were manufactured in the 1950's and sit on generous blocks. Renovating the old homes is near impossible due to the original methods of construction.
Straddling Hughesdale Primary School, the street is growing rapidly with families. Outside of school hours the area is quiet, however understandably it does swell with traffic during school drop off and pick up times.
The 701 bus runs off North Rd to Oakleigh Railway Station/ Haughton Rd via Austin St. It runs approximately every 25 minutes on a weekday.
