We are living at Bankstown from last 2 years and we found Bankstown to be pretty safe and convenient.
The bankstown centro is huge with a gym inside as well as the Cinema is right infront of it. There are many medical centres and grocery shops near train station and Rickard road. Its 16 mins away from CBD if you use M8 tunnel so all in all I found it pretty good to live.

If you look at the statistics, there is a lot of crime in the area.
