What is your experience of semi private and public schools in the northern suburbs of VIC?

I'm hoping to track suburbs based on public schooling, quite obviously can't afford the likes of strathmore, but eager to provide my family the opportunity to good schools. I'm looking at Glenroy, Fawkner, Epping and around Bundoora. Hoping to find a home under 500K.
Inputs and experiences welcome :)

I have lived and worked in the northern suburbs for many years. If you are interested in results, public schools in the northern suburbs are not great. What do you mean by semi private? Have you considered Catholic schools? They are reasonable fees and results are better.
