"Burnout capital"

You hear car and bikes burn out every day and night. Very disturbing. Just check the road condition there’s tyre mark around each and every corner of this suburb. Only good thing about this suburb is the public transport

"Fine in my Experience"

Have a place here up near the shops.
Views and Northernly aspect are great. Neighbours are really nice and say its very safe, have been there decades. Haven't had any problems at all. Are a few rev heads about but you get that everywhere. Great location if you don't need to go to the city too often, Glenorchy having most things you'd want as well as Moonah and New Town as you head towards the city. Very central to everything especially compared to the Eastern shore and outer suburbs.

"The Changing Face of a Suburb"

Since the sell off of the public housing stock Chigwell has improved dramatically. The area is now considered to be a mix between lower and middle class people. It is an now area where cheap housing allows families to afford a better lifestyle with fresh mountain air and bushy surrounds without having to give up the opportunities that city living gives.

It is a great place to live with a real community feel. It has all the basic ammenties needed with other shopping and entertainment needs only a few kilometres away.

Great for

  • Community feel
  • Family Friendly
  • Great place for a Tree change

Not great for

  • Public Transport
  • Crime problems

Hi pikac, to elaborate on the crime problems in Chigwell, they mostly stem from poverty and drug use. "Chiggers" as they are called, will often try to steal your car or wallet by snapping a pair of scissors off in you and gutter stomping you to the back of the head ("the Chigwell dental plan"). Other than that, Chigwell (pronounced 'Chigwewl') is a pretty adequate place to live if you can put up with these sorts of things and don't rely on police to come save you. Thanks!

Hi, can you give an update on the suburb in 2021?

mattb42

Yes I'd be glad to. It is much the same. The ice/meth problems are probably more deeply rooted now than they were a few years ago, and having your car stolen and burnt out is a lot more common in bogan suburbs like Chigwell, Clarendon Vale and Gagebrook than other areas in Hobart. Gangs of kids and late teens with mullets on scooters or unregistered dirt bikes screaming up and down the neighbourhood at full noise at 10pm are common. As is the lovely past time of youths standing on road over pass bridges with big boulder rocks in their hands, waiting to drop them down onto cars doing 100kmh to smash through the windscreen is something that happens a lot out here. You live in Chiggers at your own risk, really. It hasn't improved, that's for sure.
