Been living here about 9 years.
Enjoy the area and heaps of great foods and groceries stores.
Great public transportation access.

I lived 5 years in Clayton. Some people said the crime rate is high, especially near Monash Uni, but I never faced any problems there. Clayton is well known for Monash Uni and Monash Medical Centre, but most of its residents are international students. Old houses with small rooms and dirty gardens. I think Clayton is good for investors to build new townhouses and rent out, not for families.

Big suburb

Living in Clayton North (some reason not listed on the site) it’s noisy, neighbourhoods are dodgy and look derelict with a lot of grafiti and rubbish, crime has always been a problem here but apart from that it is nicely located near oakleigh, Springvale and chadston and a lot of public transport around

Pros: I’ve lived in Clayton for 20 years, I find the area extremely safe. I’ve never witnessed ANY crime here, I’m sure people have had negative experiences individually, but I would say Clayton itself is safe. I often walk alone at night time around the area. There’s an abundance of culturally diverse eateries and grocery shops around, and with the new M-City shopping centre- you have Chadstone, Spaghetti Junction and M-City at a quick bus ride/drive for any shopping needs, plus the Clayton shopping strip at your doorstep. Monash Hospital is a 5 minute walk from the station, and all adjoining medical facilities you could need (IVF, Radiology Clinics, Dentistry, physiotherapy etc) are basically right next to the hospital. There is a great Aquatic and Fitness club adjoined to a local library and theatre in central Clayton, I find the prices cheap for the centre, and the staff friendly at all venues. The library has a medium range, but the staff are happy to get books delivered from other libraries. There’s also a large range of outdoor parks/venues (like basketball courts, fitness areas and walking trails) under the new upgraded station that run along most of Clayton.

Cons: The area itself is VERY pricey, especially rent. I can only guess the expensive supply is due to heavy demand by Uni students both international and local wanting to board closer to the sought after schools and/or families wanting a central area that’s located near schools, shops and doctors. There are some homeless people who call the suburb home, but are they actually really a con like other people have said? They’re just people.

In short: I love this suburb, I’ve travelled around a bit and have stayed with friends and family across Australia and overseas- it’s possibly one of the best all rounder places to live I’ve ever come across, the problems found here are unavoidable and exist wherever you choose to live, but the clean streets, incredibly central location, convenient public transport, diverse community and gorgeous painted alleyways and friendly locals make up for it.

I've been living here for a while, and see how Clayton has improved day by day. New station, more and more mixed cultured restaurants, easy access to Chadstone and CBD.

For me, Clayton is between safe to very safe

Clayton is an amazing suburb with plenty of land here and access to world class health facilities. Crime is uncommon unless you travel through Clayton Station apparently. Haven’t used the station personally so unsure about that. A nice, quiet area with cheap house prices too and shops nearby. If you like Coles you’ll find 2 coles stores in Central Clayton. On Cooke Street, you’ll have two Coles stores on opposite sides. Library is big and is good for book lovers.

New Train Station is on the way that will renew the look of Clayton. Level crossing will be removed so no more traffic nightmares. So much food & Restaurant choices now, Italian, Greek, Korean, Chinese, Malaysian, Hongkong, .Indian, Japanese, Thai, Indonesian, all kinds of Aussie fast food choices, you name it!!! Two large Coles and plenty of parking + one extra huge Asian supermarket.

You have got hospital, uni, all sorts of clinics, physios, big 4 branches, post office, two pharmacies, and even animal hospital in one spot!! All tips in clayton south area will be closed by 2016. Very multicultural. Have a few good churches. Surrounded by Chadstone Shopping Center, Ikea Home Center, Southland Shopping center and Moorabbin DFO
easy to get on North Rd, Princess Hwy, M1 freeway. Something for young families: Oakleigh South Primary school (very close to Clayton center) an unzoned primary school has always been ranked within top 20 primary schools in Victoria.

Is it safe? Having been living in the suburbs for almost 15 years, I haven't experienced any theft or harsh moments. The area is heavily populated by migrants and students. They are mostly quiet and hard working people. They never cause any trouble and a lot of them are very educated and very polite. In fact, you will find this train line will have the most ppl giving seat to eldly. You barely see any young junkies wandering around like what you might see in Ringwood station or some western suburbs. To me, it is a perfectly safe place to live. I have heard quite a lot of people complaining about theft problem in the area. I would say that was purely due to the places they lived were all share accommodation. Those thieves would always target students as they have lower security consciousness and more stuff to steal.

House prices going up . New station and crossing being fixed. Easy to get to city. Close to Chadstone and ikea homemaker centre. Good food. Not far from beach if you can't afford bayside prices.

I ma living in Clayton from last 2 years and below is my analysis of this suburb.
Positives -
Monash University, Monash hospital and transportation.
Negatives -
As it used to be an industrial suburb so we have factories and warehouses everywhere in Clayton.
Monash university is here but because of it there are too many students and thus too many rental properties so your neighbors keep on changing every year.
Too many lower level and unskilled tradies whom I should rather say laborers.
I won't put Clayton in the safe suburbs list
Pest problem - yes there is pest problem here as i have had a spider problem and also lizard in my house besides doing pest control measures.
People are mean and careless.
Other than monash hospital and clayton road doctors (GP) there is no other good GPs here. They are just there to crunch the numbers and make money through bulk billing. Don't even know how to talk to people. (Because of baby and my wife's health I have been to almost every GP in clayton)
Etc...Etc...list goes on
* I have lived in epping, heathmont, toorak, cranbourne, broadmeadows, glen iris, burwood, ringwood, boronia, armadale besides clayton where I moved because of monash hospital as we wanted my baby's delivery in this hospital.
I will put this suburb in the last.
