Is Cowra a good place to retire?

My hubby and I are looking at Cowra to retire. Is your town as good as they say it is? Hoping someone could advise us about the best part of Cowra, or surrounding area, to buy a home. Also the weather, does it get really cold in winter? We believe it gets fairly hot in summer. Thanks Deb54.

hi there. There are no areas better than others in town really. to the south are older more established homes with cheaper homes heading further away from the CBD. the older homes near town are sought after because they are well built and strategically located close to shops and schools. the newer areas have land around 800 or 900 square metres with modern houses, underground power etc. Most of town is on sewer except the western areas over the bridge. this isnt a problem for most as they are small acres (1-5).
The thing about retirement in a country town is the range of clubs and service organisations. If you are sociable there are plenty of ways to get involved and meet friendly people. Cowra is very central and makes a good base for travelling.
Winter can get to minus 3 or 4 but most houses have fireplaces or gas heating (natural gas is piped through most of town). Summer can reach into the 40's but it is normally a dry temperature and fairly tolerable. Wear a hat! Swampbox (evapourative aircon) is very effective.

As you will see country life is not everyone's cup of tea. we dont have an Opera House or even a bowling alley. But it isnt far to find one and we only have 2 traffic lights! It takes me 2 minutes to get to work and i live on the outskirts of the suburbs.

Am I proud of Cowra? you bet, but i am not alone.

good luck Deb.
