"Trailer Trash Capital of Tasmania"
I lived in Cue Street, Youngtown for a number of years and found the neighbourhood full of low-socio economic people, reliant on Centrelink assistance and aspiring to very little in life. Domestic violence, Street parties and burn-out hoons are not uncommon in Youngtown; however it is a step up from the likes of Ravenswood, Mayfield and Rocherlea.
Housing affordability is very good as demand for the suburb of Youngtown is low, however Real Estate Agents will claim that it is a highly sought-after suburb, just to close the deal and get their commission. You could expect to buy a moderate 1960's bungalow style property on a 700sqm land area for about $260,000 however you will struggle to sell it for any significant profit margin.
The park on the corner of Medina St is run down, somewhat derelict and full of tagging. It seems to be 'the forgotten park' of Launceston and was established as a token gesture to appease the campaigning 'solo-mothers' in the neighbourhood. The school on the other hand is one of the better primary schools in Tasmania and is well-respected.
Shopping is available at Kingsmeadows and the Centro MeadowMews complex has a few basic stores but they are nothing special and are more there for convenience rather than a destination or shopping experience.
Youngtown is amongst the industrial area of Launceston and features a few commercial properties close by such as Bunnings, Bradken Industrial Steel Plant, Truck Depots on Hobart Road, Large Removal Firms such as Wridgways and Crown and various other businesses such as CarYards and the Merino Park Industrial Estate.
The weather in Launceston is often cold or very cold and the fog in winter will sink you lower and lower into depression. This depression will dissipate when the sun appears for ten weeks a year. Now I am not knocking the suburb, I am simply telling it like it is.
This would have been my least favourite suburb I have ever lived in but will leave it up to you to do your own research and decide for yourself. - Who am I to judge?
