Edgewater offers great transportion options! In addition to the Metra stop at Ravenswood/Lawrence, which is now being updated, there are fabulous express buses (136,146,147,148) that take you directly from the Edgewater neighborhood to Adams/Wacker, Museum Campus, State/Harrison, and Michigan/Congress. The red line is an easy way to access the city, with transfers at Belmont/Fullerton to the brown line. If driving, getting on Lake Shore Drive and driving south to the city is often faster than driving in from West Lake View or West Lincoln Park!

Actually i have lived all over the city and closer to downtown wrigleyville, west side, southwest, hyde park almost everywhere.....and i love the public transport options provided in Edgewater. I can get to work faster from Edgewater than when living in lakeview and lincoln park....both closer to downtown. to get to north michigan ave the Red line (not my favorite) or the 147 bus would be quickest but there are several other bus routes that work their way into the downtown.
The 147 rules for me i can be to work in 15 min once on the bus in the morning.... after i get there are just a few stops before it is on lake shore drive non stop to michigan ave,,,,,,no taxi needed even if late....for work this is just as fast.

It's Chicago, which in general means yes, and since Edgewater isn't too far from The Loop it's better than other areas, and even the worst is usually pretty decent.

Looking for a home in Edgewater, Illinois null

There's a Metra Station at 4800 N. Ravenswood. Some might call that "walking distance" for NW Edgewater & most of Andersonville.

I've turned into a total Metra snob lately. Its crazy fast and super cozy - well worth the extra $1. But its kind of limited on where it dumps you out. So, if one of the dozen or so Union Station busses won't get you directly where you need to go from there, then having a Metra station right there doesn't do much for you.

Still, it is the dominating option for getting to certain places in the city and for making those far flung suburban commutes when you need to. On the weekend you can ride anywhere you want ALL weekend for just $5. That makes being withing walking distance of Metra totally worth it on its own.
