"Great town, right on the edge of the Dandenong Ranges."

Having lived here pretty much all my life, I love this place. There are teriffic views of the city and all the "trendy suburbs", but they don't know what they're missing! On a clear day you can see the ships on the bay, the rolling hills of Lysterfield and even the You Yangs for those up the top of the hill. The shopping village is warm and friendly, but is unfortunately at risk of becoming over-developed.

Generally, backyards are large but units are becoming more popular. We're raising 3 kids here, and have a great access to local kinders, schools and of course the Angliss hospital! There are plenty of parks and activities for kids close by, for example the Arboretum, and local pools/athletics clubs. Knox Council hosts the biggest Christmas Carols outside the CBD each year, as well as several other events and shows.

You don't have to visit the "1000 steps" tourist attraction to keep fit; there are a myriad of walking trails in the forest, and bike tracks running all through the local suburbs.

All up, a great place to live; I'd hate to be stuck in a dog-box somewhere!!

"With a friendly suburban feel, this is a wonderful place to live!"

A large section of the well-known Dandenong Ranges National Park falls within the suburb of Ferntree Gully, including the popular 1000 Steps Kokoda Memorial trail, dedicated to the Kokoda Trail of WW2 many locals and tourists gather here for exercise or a picnic. It is serviced by a rail station on the Belgrave line which takes you in to the CBD in around 45mins. There are many schools and kindergartens in the suburb and surrounding area such Ferntree Gully North Primary School, Mountain Gate Primary School, St John the Baptist Primary School, and St Joseph's College. There’s Mountain Gate Shopping Centre where you’ll find Woolworths, BWS, pet supplies and various other retail and restaurants, Aldi, another Woolworths and Chemist Warehouse further down the road, and many cafes, fast food outlets and restaurants in between. Westfield Knox is just up Burwood Hwy where you can shop till you drop, see a movie or enjoy a drink and some music at the Irish Pub! Plenty of medical facilities also with The Angliss Hospital located in Ferntree Gully.

"Green tree lined 40 minutes from the city"

A highly affordable suburb that blends the benefits of living in a community nestled in the Dandenong's whilst having city views. A great area with many benefits for the avid hiker or for those who simply enjoy not living in a concrete jungle but want to go for a casual latte at the large Westfield Shopping Centre.

"Beautiful Views with quick access to the city"

Beautiful views of the mountains and easy access to trains and buses. East link means Frankston or beach is 20 mins away and city is 40 mins. Bush walking at a national park - up the mountains at the famous 1000 steps. Cottages and tourist spots for devonshire teas at Olinda and The Dandenongs only 10 minutes away. Plenty of schools, tafes and univeristies close by. Knox City only 5 mins away has all your shopping needs fulfilled. People are friendly! I lived in Parkdale near the beach now I love Ferntree Gully !

Rentals in Ferntree Gully

"Most Ideal City - where you will find the meaning of life."

Ferntree Gully is a suburb that is ideal for families with children. It is a safe and peaceful suburb with lots of public amenities including libraries, parks and bike tracks. There are many good schools for you to choose from including some of those in the surrounding suburbs. A Swinburne University branch campus is situated in the neighbouring suburb of Scoresby, Monash University main campus and Deakin University branch campus are also located within 15 km from Ferntree Gully, offering good opportunities for tertiary education to the children living here. There are many shopping centres within Ferntree Gully or nearby for your shopping and banking convenience as well as dining. For example, the famous Knox City shopping centre which houses the Myer department store, branches of the major banks, Target, Coles, Kmart, Harris Scarfe, many boutiques, cafes and shops is also situated here (strictly speaking should be nearby but some people actually treat Knox City shopping centre as part of Ferntree Gully !). Just outside of this major shopping centre, there is the so-called Ozone - where you will find lots of dining outlets serving a great variety of cuisines including traditional Aussie, Irish, Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Indonesian food, electrical & electronic goods shops such as Harvey Norman, JB HiFi and Dick Smith, the Village Cinema and amusement arcade. This suburb is well serviced by public transports. There is a railway station within the suburb and two other nearby stations in the neighbouring suburbs of Upper Ferntree Gully and Boronia. Bus services are very frequent and serve most areas within the suburb very well. Job wise, there is plenty of opportunities ranging from professional to factory workers and retail employees.

I am of the opinion that the properties in Ferntree Gully are very good value for money - generally occupying large land blocks and not being over-priced because the suburb has been traditionally overlooked by immigrants and investors. However, this trend is changing and it is attracting more and more people to buy and live here. If you look at its median price, you will find that it increased steadily over the last ten years or so at an annual rate of around 10% per annum. I bet this trend will continue if not improve significantly over the next decade !

"Schools, shops, parks, gardens, and close to a national park"

A beautiful name for a lovely suburb. It is far enough out of the city in the foothills of the Dandenongs to give a country feel but its close enough to the city to commute if needed. With plenty of well trees, walking trails and a national park there is a lot to like about Ferntree Gully. It is a good place to bring up a family and would suit those with an active lifestyle but not those that want to get out and have that inner city living. It is not far from a major shopping centre and there's easy access to public transport to get into the city.
There are also a number of reasonable places to get a meal close by.
There are plenty of schools in the area as well as kindergartesn and child care making it a reasonable suburb for family living.

"Country town near the city"

Ferntree Gully is far enough from the city to offer country style living but is close enough to the city to commute daily. It is a good place to bring up a family and has a national park with a number of walking trails. It is close to a major shopping centre and there's easy access to public transport. If you want to work in the city, but aren't too keen about bringing up a family there, Ferntree Gully could be just the place you're looking for. There are also a number of family restaurants where you can grab a hearty dinner.
