I've not long turned 50 myself and just relocated and started a new life in Penshurst,after moving from Melbourne.
I can't comment on Hamilton,as i only venture there every few weeks,though that said,it's not to my liking,but horses for courses for ones needs and wants in regards to proximity to amenities....but if your after more of a country feel,with the necessities and a nice progressive country town with history,open space and nice,friendly people,i'd highly recommend Penshurst.
