Theres a 7 miles hike I love called Devil's Creek, you can drive to the trailhead its off a little road just north of Lake City if I remember right. You can walk and view the Lake Fork Valley as it follows the Devil's Creek drainage and ends atop Cannibal Plateau at Devil's Lake--thats named after Alfred Packer

Looks like lots of hiking, "Hinsdale County offers seemingly endless miles of trails, 19 public campgrounds, five fourteeners, and over 20 thirteeners"

Wetterhorn Peak is a lesser known 14er that is 11 miles west of Lake City, there are some great hikes up that mountain I have heard about but not done myself...

I have not done Mt. Democrat but I bet they could handle it next summer season:)
