Revamp your bedroom on a budget

Is your bedroom feeling a bit tired or erring on the safe dull side décor wise? Here are six inexpensive updates to bring the joie de vivre back into your bedroom to refresh your resting space.

1. Theming isn’t just for kids.

First things first you’ll need to settle on a decorative theme for your bedroom makeover that reflects your personality and is conducive to a relaxing and restful environment. In recent years the classic Hamptons coastal style has become very popular in Australia or perhaps a fresh take on Scandinavian chic or Parisian romance may suit your room better.

For sale:  7 Carool Court, Mount Martha, VIC.

2. Introduce a comfy rug.

Getting out of a warm bed is tough enough in the morning but is harder still when you step out straight onto a cold hard floor. A comfy rug or sheepskin floor mat can instantly make your morning better, your bedroom feel cosier and unify the whole look of your room.

If you’re going for a large rug make sure the size is right for the space and ensure that it can be neatly tucked under the bed and other furniture to avoid a trip hazard, as no one wants to fall flat on their face on a late night bathroom run.

Depending on the look you’re going for, Urban Outfitters and West Elm have some funky Aztec inspired rugs or Target has some with bold colourful prints.

3. Upholstered headboard.

A headboard can make even the plainest mattress and base look luxurious and sleek. There’s a huge variety of colours, materials and styles available in upholstered headboards. The great thing about upholstered headboards is that in a few years you can dramatically refresh the look of your bedroom again, without having to replace your whole bed, using a different style headboard.

Fantastic Furniture have stylish customisable upholstered bedheads with over 100 fabrics and colours to choose from priced from $149.

For sale: 2/30 Boronia Road, Bellevue Hill, NSW

4. Fresh linen.

As the largest element and focal point of a bedroom, your bed linen can make a huge difference and work wonders to refresh and bring the room to life. Some new throw cushions, new crisp white sheets and a graphic quilt cover set can have a dramatic impact on the feel and theme of the room.

Adairs have some lovely soft stonewashed quilt covers in a range of pastel colours that might suit you if you’re going for a clean vintage vibe.

5. Bold accent wall.

For an instant touch of drama choose to paint an accent wall in your favourite bold shade. Dark greys, navy blues and rich dark emerald green are all shades that will add a edgy sophisticated feel to the bedroom. When working with a glamorous dark shade on a feature wall it’s important to balance it out with clean lines and touches of white to keep the room feeling light, spacious and restful.

For sale: 92 Humphries Road, Mount Eliza, VIC.

6. Bright ideas.

To make your bedroom more chilled and peaceful consider adding in heavier lampshades to your bed side lamps, fire-fly lights to your headboard or a new more subdued cover or dimmer switch to your main source of light. Having different levels of lighting will allow you to adapt the amount of light you need based on your mood and the time of day, and will also help to promote more restful sleep after lights out.

Typo have a great range of twinkle lights, light boxes and hanging lights.
