5 dashing home décor trends for 2017

Looking for a bold new look as the new year approaches? Well now’s the perfect time to take stock of up and coming home décor trends that’ll be on everyone’s radar come 2017.

Expect to see a move away from the clean lines of minimalist Scandi styles of 2016, and make way for more eclectic, organic and textural furnishings and finishes in the home.

With the support of interior design experts here are the home décor trends you’ll be loving in 2017.

Au naturel

In terms of textiles and soft furnishings natural fibres and materials will dominate 2017 interior design. Invest in rugged and rustic textural homewares that feel like the material they’re made from.

Keep your eyes peeled for woven jute rugs, clay pottery, linen slip covers, terracotta pots and tiles, the revival of cane and rattan furniture, seagrass baskets and bamboo homewares.

According to Dulux Communications Manager and Colour Planner extraordinaire Andrea Lucena-Orr the must-have furniture item for 2017 are pieces made of ‘woven leather or woven textiles with an emphasis on tactility’.

‘There is so much in texture, from textiles to tiles to floor coverings; it is a key trend in 2017’, Andrea explains.

In regards to kitchen design ‘we’re seeing stronger colours on higher cabinetry and natural granite and stone in more of an organic appearance (not heavily polished) for benchtops,’ Andrea says.

In a move away from copper, rose gold and shiny metallic home fittings, Andrea predicts we’ll see the rise of metals in their natural aged states. She predicts ‘burnished and aged metal furnishings and accessories will be on trend’ for 2017.

Paint it grey

In relation to fashionable paint colours for 2017 stylist, decorator, homewares buyer and co-founder of The Decorating School Emma Blomfield says that ‘grey is here to stay. We saw it come into fashion a couple of years ago and it’s not going anywhere’.

Andrea backs this expectation explaining that ‘muted greiges (grey beiges) are growing in popularity’. Andrea suggests the best colour scheme to invest in now is use of ‘soft greys for the main colour. Look to the gorgeous shades of Dulux Silkwort, Tranquil Retreat or Dieskau for inspiration. They have great versatility and work with many colours’.

Preen over green

In line with the organic and natural theming of the moment, soothing foliage-based greens are on the hot colour scheme agenda. Andrea says ‘khaki green will take a step forward in 2017, with Dulux’s Army Fatigues taking centre stage’.

Emma also explains we can expect to see ‘pastel tones on the walls like sage greens and soft blues’ which are great for their calming effects without dominating a space.

‘Greenery or interior plants are still trending’, Andrea points out. When it comes to house plants in 2017 more is more and we can expect lush leafy houseplants and foliage prints taking pride position in interior spaces from bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas alike.

Introduce potted olive trees, palm trees and crocodile ferns for an instant deluxe boost of greenery and life to any interior space.

The formal dining comeback

We can expect to see a move away from open plan living in 2017 as the impractical realities of this layout have set in. With combined kitchens, meals, living and study areas homeowners are experiencing problems with cooking smells and noise and are moving back towards more traditional defined living layouts.

Cancel your plans to convert that disused formal dining area into a rumpus or cinema room, Emma has seen a shift in people ‘opting to bring back the formal dining space in favour of family time around the dinner table and entertaining guests on weekends’.

Andrea says we can anticipate ‘entertainment spaces that blur the line between inside and out to still very much be the popular design choice with new builds and renovations’.

Globe-trotting

Mixing eclectic styles from different exotic cultures from around the world is going to be in in a big way in the new year.

Combine colourful, crafty and intricate artefacts and textiles from your travels to develop your own unique ‘global nomad’ style.

In terms of on vogue colour schemes Andrea predicts we’ll see the rise of ‘deep oranges and reds such as Dulux’s Temptress and Gold Pheasant inspired by the diversity of cultural influences from as far as South America across to the Middle East’.
