Good furniture stores in NYC

Pier 1 Imports has, I think, really nice, reasonably priced stuff. There's one on 86th and Lexington
Pier 1 imports is in the same league as Ikea for me and I'm looking for something less obvious.
Atlantic Avenue has a stretch of antique and vintage furniture stores. I don't know if you're interested in that as opposed to new furniture. There are rarely prices on the items, which means you can talk down the dealers and maybe get a good deal on a bed.
I was going to suggest Atlantic Ave as well. Do you mean a sofa and/or a bed or do you mean a sofa that is also a bed?
@NeverSleeps, DBlack: Thank you! I'll have a look. Where on Atlantic exactly would you say is a good place to start the search?
Atlantic Ave in Boreum Hill!

@NeverSleeps Cool, that list looks very promising. I need a new bed, but would consider something that doubles as a couch, if I can find something stylish and of decent quality.
Really, @uraniumfish? I much prefer P1 stuff to Ikea - although I suppose they are still in the same general range.
@Uraniumfish: Have you tried 1-800-mattress? I remember getting a bed from them a few years ago. They have specials certain times in the year.
Isn't P1 crazy expensive? I mean, for what it is?
A preliminary look on Atlantic yielded some great finds in furniture, but not a lot in terms of the bed I need. I'll go again and have a closer look, but I might need further recommendations if that doesn't work out...
What style are you looking for, @uraniumfish?
@Uraniumfish I second all the suggestions of furniture stores on Atlantic Avenue, my brother who lives on One Hanson Place has picked up great stuff( a side cabinet, huge mirror )from these stores.
@Uraniumfish I would suggest even walking around the Flatiron district , there are so many stores there you never know what one may throw up.. Have you looked at the Door Store, Design within Reach and even the Housing Works stores ?
@Uraniumfish: You have so many choices to go with. I heard yesterday on the radio that 1-800-mattress had a sale going on. They claimed it was 50% to 70% off. Check it out and see what bargains they have. They do deliver.
@hhusted I think Uraniumfish is in the market for the structural part of the bed - a fancy frame, so to speak - rather than a mattress. Though I could be wrong.
@BroadwayBK: That is a good question. So Uraniumfish, what is it you are looking for exactly? Are you trying to find a mattress or the actual sofa that opens into a bed?
@BroadwayBK, hhusted I'm in the market for either a really stylish sofa that is big enough or fold out enough to also be a decent bed, or else a whole bed, structure and mattress. I think I'm stalled by indecision at this point. I think I have unrealistic expectations, as though I think I'll find that one rare gem that is both comfy and supremely stylish, and affordable. I found a nice classifieds listing for second-hand furniture and hopefully something will come up in the next week or two that seems like the right fit. None of the standard stores I've visited really held up to my rigorous standards, it seems. Or they did, but then the prices were stratospheric.
A nice option might be getting a plain bed, but then decorating it such that it functions as a sofa (ie, bolster along the side, colorful pillows, throws) unless you're actually trying to sleep on it.
@Uraniumfish, yes price can be a problem, especially when you are on a budget. Well, keep us informed and let us know how you make out.
@Uraniumfish I was going to suggest classified listings. Which ones are you looking at?
