It makes me sad how many parents buy their kids "cute little bunnies" only to abandon them when it turns out they require, you know, care and feeding. It really disgusts me how people can be so callous and unwitting regarding animal life

@ajadeidealist I know! That was the worst part of the article, the discarded bunny phenomenon on the Monday after Easter.

In Florida there is an issue with discarded pet ball pythons and lion fish. Think I'll take bunnies.

@BroadwayBK I think I did once see a feature on Animal Planet about abandoned pythons in Florida. Why in the world would someone want to keep a known predator as a pet??? yikes... my skin is crawling as I write this

Do you guys remember when there were an insane number of snakes hanging out in peoples' toilets because former owners tried flushing them? I would die of fright, I think. That is my worst nightmare.

@JenMac Did that happen here?! I always thought stories like that weren't possible - I mean how would a snake survive being flushed through all those pipes? But then again maybe it's not as bad an ordeal as it seems.

@Everyone: That is bad for anyone to let bunnies go because it is after Easter. That should be listed as animal cruelty.

Yeah, it was here! I don't know how they survived either. But, maybe snakes can't die . . . because they are the DEVIL! Man, I hate snakes.

@JenMac I think it was in Brooklyn, a lady woke up and went to the bathroom. She sleepily lifted the toilet seat cover to see a python staring up at her. For a moment she thought she was dreaming but then she started screaming.... I would have died of fright..

@uptowngirl Yeah, that is the urban myth I've heard just about anywhere.... Crazy that it could have really happened!

@uptowngirl Ha... I actually used to have a ball python, but my sister ended up keeping it, and he eventually died of old age. It was kind of cool to watch the mouse-attack. Sorry if that's horrible. The lion fish thing bothers me more - those things are wreaking havoc on the ecosystem. Why would you pay $500 for a fish and then free it in the ocean? Just kill the thing if you need to part with it - it's an effing fish!

@BroadwayBK Wow a ball python!what made you decide to keep a snake as a pet? did you keep him in a tank?

There's a hawk near where I live that regularly catches and eats squirrels.....maybe he's caught a couple bunnies in his time?

Dunno though, I'd rather have rabbits running around than squirrels.

@Oren There's hawks in the city? Wow.

@uptowngirl Yes, Jorge lived in a tank. I'm not sure why I picked him out. A bunch of friends had pythons in college and I just jumped on the bandwagon I suppose. But I thought he was really cool.

@everyone Aren't there hawks just about everywhere? My parents have one that lingers around their Florida backyard, with one eye out for my sister's little dog. It's beautiful, even if it wants to eat some Pomeranian for dinner.

Gulp! I hope the dog is okay, @BroadwayBK!

@ajadedidealist He's fine. He is a little big for that hawk... which doesn't really stop the hawk from thinking about it, or so it seems.
