Best quirky suburb in Melbourne for a family?

Hi! We will be relocating from the UK to Melbourne hopefully this August and can't make our mind up where to rent! We have two teenage boys, one has ADHD, so we need a good school and would need to live in that zone, I guess. So we need to get it spot on, as I don't want to move them again in case we want to buy a house. My husband will be working at Monash Clayton, I am an artist. We were thinking of Belgrave but feel that it is too far out (loved the school). We loved Fitzroy when we stayed for a visit, but it is too expensive. We love quirkiness, a nice village, greenery, cafes etc. One school we liked was Ashwood. Would it be nice to live around there? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
