Reviews of New Town, TAS

"Safe, quiet and inexpensive"

Having grown up in New Town, it is the kind of place that is wedged between lower socio-economic parts and upper-middle class families. This gives it a very different feel dependent on which street/specific area you reside in. Generally, having lived on Loina St, Swanston St and Queen St, I have found New Town to be very peaceful and generally quite safe. There is an abundance of parks and some of the best schools are in this suburb. There are a few shopping options around, although if you want clothes or specialty items you may have to travel elsewhere. It is quite central to Hobart, and nearly all buses that depart from bus stop E in the mall run through the area. Overall, as long as you stay away from the housing developments/the area across from New Town plaza, I would highly recommend New Town.

Great for

  • Family friendly
  • Housing styles
  • Peaceful
  • Recreation and Parks

Not great for

  • Some dodgy streets

"Great Place for the Family"

New Town is located 4 kms north north west of Hobart. The federation houses make an attractive streetscape. When Hobart was resettled in the early 1800's, it was the place where the first free settlers landed. New Town has its own local primary school. It is also the only place in Tasmania to have two public single sex high schools. There is also a Catholic school. It has beautiful tree-lined streets with equally beautiful houses. The styles of the large houses vary between Art Deco, Georgian, Italianate, Colonial and Federation. It has alot of great parks and the InterCity Cycleway traverses the suburb enroute to the city. There is a major shopping centre local to the area, which meets all of the needs of the residents. So there is little need to travel too far from home. It is the perfect place to raise a family.

Great for

  • Family friendly
  • Peaceful
  • Housing styles

Not great for

  • Public transport
  • Cost of housing
  • Nightlife
