Chess in NYC

Thomson Street! I've played chess there a few times with the people who were also there to play and practice. These two shops are both really welll known with the chess playing crowds. They also sell ornate and funny chess boards of all kinds.

Chess - sounds like fun. I would have to relearn it. Haven't played chess in a very long time.
Yeah, ajadeidealist, Thomson Street would be my first thought.
What a good place to try, @uraniumfish. When I was younger I went to competitions and tournaments at Columbia Grammar, and took classes at Nightingale - but both are just for kids, alas.
Maybe you and I should try a game some time ajadedidealist. Once I recall the rules, I may just be good competition. I learned chess when I was in high school many years ago. The nation's chess champion (can't recall his name) came to my school for a visit one day. I was on the school newspaper so it was my job to interview him. In exchange for my interview, he taught me how to play chess.
