NYPD to Increase Night Patrols
You can read more about what they will do by going to this website:

Although the actual precincts were not mentioned, it would be interesting to know the areas that have the highest crime rate, in particular shootings.

I'm sure that data could be found online. In fact, here we go! http://nymag.com/news/features/crime/2008/42608/
Thanks ajadedidealist for posting that link. I knew there was data out there somewhere.
@ajadedidealist Good map. I'm surprised there's so much crime in Midtown and the Lower East Side.
Perhaps people mugging/targeting businessmen? Midtown at night in some areas can be quite quiet, so I imagine that has something to do with it. People targeting wealthy business-types coming home late for work. Or bankers' bar fights....
@Ajadedidealist: Good questions. Makes you stop and think doesn't it. Why would people be targeted in these area and not much elsewhere?
@ajadeidealist It's probably related to Penn Station and some of the commercial areas around there, which can be deserted and shady at night. Not tom mention Hell's Kitchen! Have you ever walked around there? The people sitting on stoops are might shady, plus there are a number of low income housing developments around there.
Come to think of it, there are a lot of low income housing developments in LES too and I bet that's where most of teh crime is centered.
@DBlack I'm not - the lower part of the LES isn't exactly the high life.
@ajadedidealist Nice map.
Good point about Hell's Kitchen, @uraniumfish! I didn't think of that! I thought the area was gentrifying, although I've always thought of Port Authority as a tad shady, rightly or wrongly...
