Summer in the City

So, now that we're in the snowy dead of winter, how about some talk of summer to lighten our days? Are you all keen on summer in the city? Personally, I find that enough people are out of town that it gets frustrating; that said, there's plenty to do. My favorite summer activities are Shakespeare in the Park (2008's Hamlet was incredible, I thought), and the Summerstage Concerts, as well as cycling by the West Side Highway bike path.

My absolute favorite phrase is "summer in the city." It may be cliche - it's not like that is what I am going to call my great American novel - but it brings up so many lovely memories. I love the first few days when summer hits in NYC and the entire city flocks outdoors for what seems like the first time in months.

I love summertime. It is so cosy for me. It may be hot, but I love the hot weather. I am not sure if I will be here during the summer months all the time. I may go away for vacation. If I am here, I'll check out some things.

Summer is my absolute favorite season in the city. Yes, its hot and humid but then you dont have to dress in layers to step outside and you can wear sandals all the time. I love all the al fresco dining options that the city offers during the summer and the fact that New Yorkers generally seem a bit sunnier and happier during the summer months when people are outdoors a lot cycling, walking, playing tennis, swimming or just lounging in the park- aha summer where art thou??

@BroadwayBK - ever heard the Regina Spektor song "Summer in the City"? I believe it's about NYC, actually...

I love how there's a moment in late March, when the first warm-ish day hits the city and EVERYBODY is outside all of a sudden, wearing T-shirts, even though it's still a bit too cool for it.

You guys, I think this is typical urban-fantasy territory, to start talking about summer in the middle of February! I know I'm about finished with the cold and dark by now...

Yeah, bring me the summar and I am happy. I'll wear short pants and a short sleeve shirt and go out with either sandles or my snickers.

I just love it.

@hhusted usual summer clothes preferably cotton and sleeveless, wedges and the de rigueur in NYC big sunglasses!
@uraniumfish I was in the LES today and noticed all the boutiques there had cheery summer dresses in their windows . Seems like everyone in NYC is ready for summer though I am aware fashion trends tend to gallop ahead of the seasons like on Thursday, February 11 th,Bryant Park will get ready to host its last New York Fashion week which will but naturally showcase fall 2010 fashion.

@Uptowngirl: Many things that NYC does is about 3 to 6 months ahead. When July or August come around, stores are beginning to sell Halloween stuff. By September, Christmas stuff is already out.

I wear summer dresses in the summer - light and cool, but also elegant and a bit feminine. I tend to go for the trousers/tailored blazers/button-downs/scarves look for the rest of the year; summer is the time to explore my girlier side.

Oh, and enormous sunglasses, of course...

Did anyone else really enjoy the weather today? It seemed bright and fresh and not-that-cold. Or maybe I was just so happy to be outside after not feeling well that it was better than it seemed.

The weather is so cruel right now. It has been bright and sunny and warmer than previous weeks. . . . and, I know there is supposed to be another snow storm coming. Ugh. I feel like I've barely left my apartment all winter. I see people in restaurants and I think, "man, that looks pretty ambitious."

@Uptowngirl: Keep thinking it girl. Unfortunately, according to accu-weather, the storm is going to be more powerful than a blizzard and will dump at least a foot of snow on NYC, maybe more, depending on the path it takes. The storm is actually two separate storms that will merge together.

Look out NYC!!!!!

@BroadwayBK: It is always great to have someone around who is willing to help. If I lived near you, I would do what I could without compensation.

@BroadwayBK youre right and pea soup would be highly appreciated especially on a cold, blustery day .. though I was actually thinking of the unemployed people who you mentioned , they probably would be happy to help for a small remuneration. My friend who lives in Long Island says that her neighbors are happy to pay her son and his friends to shovel their driveways and the lads who are in college enjoy the exercise and the extra bucks.

@BroadwayBk according to Bloomberg's press conference earlier today NYC has not this much snow for over a decade.. I think the last time it was this bad was in 1992.. that's what they were discussing on the news..I actually made snowballs out of some of the snow which had accumulated on one of my window sills and then I chucked them out into the street.. the street under my apartment is a dead end .. nobody really walks out there so I was safe so in spite of my gloomy mood I had a bit of fun with the snow this morning:) ...
