Ton of Rats in City
I believe we spoke about insects and other rodents in this forum, but can't recall which one it was.
When I read the article today, I was really astounded at the number of rats and that the landlord doesn't do anything about it.
Here is the entire story:

We have little mice once in a while but not rats. Wow.
I just found the other forum:
http://www.streetadvisor.com/new_york/forums/shocker-subway-study-finds-that-man-is-no-match-for-rat
The difference is this one talks about rats in an apartment building in lower Manhattan. Gross no matter where they are.

Other than rats being seen in apartments in the LES, have anyone of you seen rats in your apartment building?
Nope! And I hope it stays that way!
Good for you. I also hope it stays that way for you. I also hope others are living without rats.
@hhusted I would die if I saw a rat in my apartment building.. mice I have seen but not a bandicoot thank god
@hhusted more stories on how rats are infesting the city..now they are taking over the Metro Card machines..gross

@Uptowngirl: Thanks for the link. I don't care what the MTA said regarding the rats and the machines. If there is a provblem, it should be dealt with.
Silly question but....what's a bandicoot?
@Ajadedidealist: This website should answer your question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandicoot
Here's a better website about it: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/mammals/marsupial/Bandicootprintout.shtml
What is going on here between the vermin and the bedbugs?
@JenMac: Good question. Did someone bring them here when visiting another country or state?
Awww! They're kind of cute, in a weird little way! Okay bandicoots!
Another state? I think NYC is pretty much the only place that has a bedbug problem. I had never even heard of them until I moved here.
@ajadeidealist They're vermin! You'd probably think differently confronted with the real life thing rather than a picture.
@Uraniumfish - no doubt! But I do have a weakness for (clean-looking) fuzzy wuzzy things of all varieties! I'm just very easily swayed by "teh cute."
I kinda think vermin are cute too. I just know I'd feel differently if they were in my house, though.
@Ajadedidealist: You just love little animals, right. That is a good thing. My girlfriend loves little animals to.
@JenMac you bet! I had a full blown hysteria attack when i found one darting in and out of my kitchen a couple of years ago.
@Everyone I can't even begin to tell you all how clean Hong Kong is .. for such a densely populated city, I have yet to see rats, cockroaches and other vermin here. I guess all those epidemics like SARs taught to the folks to be extra vigilant here.. hand santizers abound in stores and building foyers and the streets are constantly being cleaned though some of the beaches need to be cleaned up as well.
@Everybody: I know someone who has a couple of mice for pets. He has some kind of wheel and stuff the mouse plays in. Rather cute if I say so.
This whole city is due for some serious sanitizing. I'm amazed lately how filthy everything is, from streets to subway stations to grungy corners in apartments.
@Uraniumfish I know.. my apartment faces the FDR and if I open a window everything is soon covered in black soot coming to think of it the soot comes in even if I dont open an window!!! When I am in NYC I am constantly cleaning and even then the apartment is not clean enough.
@uptowngirl Although it's important that everyone keep their own places clean, I actually think this level of unsanitary conditions is the fault of the city govt and its bad management. There's no reason the city needs to be this filthy and vermin infested, and it wouldn't be all that expensive to institute policies that keep the city at an acceptable level of clean.
@Uraniumfish what you say is so true and to think we pay such high taxes just to have the privilege of living in NYC.Its a real shame.
@uptowngirl all the more surprising that a city so wealthy is so mismanaged.
It doesn't seem that NYC's budget is managed too wisely - it's not exactly the most efficient city. Then again, what city is?
@ajadedidealist Cities like Hong Kong and Singapore are extremely clean and well managed. I have friends who live in Geneva and they come to NYC on shopping trips ever so often but they always get turned off by the filth in the subway etc apparently Geneva is another city that is extremely clean, I havent yet been so I can't really comment.
The vermin problem must have a lot to do with the waste management system - especially in the LES. In places where people are partying all the time, perhaps it's necessary to come and pick up the garbage more often.
@NeverSleeps Kinda funny that you point out the waste management system, which is definitely one of the problems, since the big NYC cliche is that waste management is run entirely by mobsters. I wonder how true the cliches are?
@Uptowngirl: We are constantly cleaning because of the dust and soot coming in the apartment. It is really bad. That is what happens when there are industries nearby.
@hhusted Do we have major industries in NYC? I thought the economy was largely service based but I guess NJ located nearby has a ton of industrial units?
