Oakland is actually not one of my favorite areas, and one of the main reasons for this is the crime rate. I would not consider this a safe or even terribly nice neighborhood.

There are some areas to avoid. Overall, the crime in Oakland is above the city average, for now. The area is one of many Chicago neighborhoods that are in the midst of re-development, which should create a turnaround in the next couple of years.
