"A progressive friendly sporting community"

Parkes is a friendly town with a very low crime rate and an active sporting community. It is famous for the Elvis Festival and the Dish but also the warm and open community. Parkes has strong industry including transport, mining, agriculture and toursim to support a good size community. Always a helping hand about and many sporting teams to be involved in the community also has an active M&D society and many other organisations. Having grown up in Sydney and lived all around Australia Parkes has simply been a fantastic place to live.

"Unless you're Young or Born here, Dont Bother"

Not an overly friendly town, unless you're young, Born here or have lots of money. Plenty of Jobs, but be careful who you work for, as you see the same employers advertising and complaining about not being able to find staff, despite treating current Staff poorly.
Real estate is extremely overpriced for a town with not many positives. Lots of Pet shops , but you have to travel 30ks to find a decent hardward store.
Great Festivals and Pubs, but all the positive i can find

"Better than Forbes"

Not a terrible town, it has far more options when it comes to shopping, and employment, than its neighbouring town, Forbes. The sights are far better, there's just more to do.
It has similar issues that most country towns have, that being there's not as much of anything that one might find in a more suburban area, but it's still not terrible. All in all, I'd say this would be a good place to live, not the best, just good.

Great for

  • Country town with plenty of shopping options
  • Elvis Festival
  • The Dish
  • Childcare
  • M&D society
  • Plenty of Schools

Not great for

  • Can be a clicky little township

"just about everybody is friendly in this area and it is a town with a deep sporting history."

Parkes is just the right size town. Unlike Orange and Dubbo that are just cities in the country with a lot of the city problems. A very progressive Parkes Bowling and Sports Club, and the services (RSL) club is well looked after too.
Shopping is OK and most stores can be competitive to the larger regional cities if you haggle.
NorthParkes mine is a 20 min drive out of town;it is not in the township as stated in another revue.

Great for

  • Laid back
  • People are very helpfull
  • Childcare
  • M&D society
  • Plenty of Schools

Rentals in Parkes

"A small town that does have it pluses but it is well and truely over priced as the mines are in town and within driving time to cadia also.."

Yes parkes has its upside like the Elvis festival, dish, utes in the paddocks, close to the lovely lake at Forbes etc. But to be honest its a smaller industrial town, with the unemployed still very prominent while there is a presence of working class...I still can not get over the fact you can not go down the street with out hearing some person using obscenities in there general conversation. The rentals and some house prices for sale are well over priced and living off the miners boom, you can get the same price if not cheaper in Nelsons bay-lemon tree passage for example....Sorry Parkes but your not looking after your bread and butter, unless your in mining or well paid jobs, id advise to live in Forbes-gee its only 20 mins away.

Great for

  • M&D society
  • Childcare
  • Plenty of Schools

Not great for

  • Rentals too expensive and not enough
  • Not enough shopping choice
  • Can be a clicky little township

"Parkes - Home of The Dish"

Parkes is on the western side of the Great Dividing Range and is a large town. There are many things to see and do in and around the city. A must is a visit to the CSIRO Radio Telescope and Discovery Centre. The movie, The Dish was made here and centre on the dish itself. Other places of interest are Peak Hill Open Cut Gold Mine, historical museums, Tyndall’s Lavender farm and Memorial Hill. Parkes offers accommodation to suit all budgets and there are a number of restaurants and eateries for your enjoyment. For the nature lovers Goobang National Park is only 30kms north east of the town and you can go bushwalking, bird watching and check out the native orchids that grown there.
