I wouldn't call it overly expensive, at least in comparison to how expensive it is anywhere to build a home. Poughkeepsie has a decent cost of living, and while it'll cost a fair amount of money to build a home, it's not exactly worse than other areas. The nice thing is you have a fair number of local builders/craftsmen who can give you the home of your dreams.
